Kristen McCann, a UNC field hockey player from 1997-2000, has been named Carolina's winner of the TAGHeuer Trophy. The trophy is given annually to the most valuable athlete in the Carlyle Cup competition between UNC and Duke.
The 2000 Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year, McCann starred in both of Carolina's field hockey wins over Duke. She scored two goals in Carolina's 3-0 win in Chapel Hill on Aug. 26. Then, in the Oct. 1 rematch at Duke, McCann scored the winning goal with 9:42 to play, tipping in a pass by Jana Toepel, to secure the 2-1 victory. For the season, McCann led the ACC with 27 goals, the second-highest single-season total in UNC history.
McCann, a native of Macungie, Pa., was a Dean's List and ACC Honor Roll student and graduated last spring with a degree in psychology. She will officially be presented the TAGHeuer Trophy at the Carolina-Duke football game on November 17 at Kenan Stadium.
The TAGHeuer Trophy is sponsored by TAGHeuer Watch company, and the Carlyle Cup by Carlyle & Co. jewelers.
