LEE PACE'S EXTRA POINTS: Position-By-Position Analysis
August 16, 2001 | Extra Points
QB: Hopefully a summer of football focus will help set Curry up for banner year. He's been a great athlete playing the position for three years. Now can he become a quarterback? Durant appears solid as No. 2.
RB: For first time since Johnson & Johnson year of '93, Heels have two TBs with ability, speed and experience in Parker and Williams. Fullback up for grabs among Moore, Faison, Jones and Hedgecock.
WR: Five of seven top WRs from 2000 return, giving Heels solid corp of big-play threats. Allen a keg of dynamite. Bailey, Aiken round out triple threat. Russell key switch from TB, will make impact in 2001.
OL: Absolutely key position on team. Heralded signing class of 1999 produces at least trio of red-shirt sophs to join senior Adam Metts. Do Greg Woofter, Marcus Wilson, Jupiter Wilson have the goods?
TE: Loss of Crumpler and Finger leaves gaping void as there weren't many reps available behind them. Brown and Hilton fighting to take No. 1 spot in preseason. UK transfer Blizzard not likely to play in '01.
DE: A bright spot in Bunting's first year. Peppers remarkable athlete, lacking only polish and technical dexterity. Evans quality player on other side. Mooring, Banks are backups, Dumas freshman of note.
DT: Sims and Chapman provide teriffic starting tandem, but shoulder problems in camp a concern for Chapman. Eric Davis needed for depth. RS frosh Seawright and Montgomery improving.
LB: Perry returns as fifth-year senior following knee injury. Will play outside with David Thornton. Quincy Monk starter in middle. Gaddy, Harris, Bullard backups with potential yet little game experience.
DB: Corners return in Hood and Waddell, Knight quality backup. Reid set to emerge as force at free safety, runs well, hits hard. Greenwood fired by previous staff, returns under Jon Tenuta as No. 1 at strong.
P/PK: Placekicking duties in capable domain of Jeff Reed, who made 80 percent of his FGs in 2000 and everything inside 47 yards. Lafferty inherits punting duties with defection of Ferguson.
