Meredith Krull is a senior from Raleigh and a member of the UNC rowing team. Throughout the year, she will provide TarHeelBlue.com readers with an inside look at her team and the experience of being a varsity athlete at North Carolina.
After a really tough week of strength conditioning and the season-opening test battery, Coach Furtek gave us the weekend off to rest and relax before we start to swing into high gear for the fall season. I took this opportunity to head up north to Boston to visit Kim Dilda, an alumnae from our most recent graduating class. We spent the weekend running alongside the Charles River and enjoying the atmosphere and cool weather.
This week after one of our erg tests, Joel announced that our team had been invited to compete in the Head of the Charles Regatta this Fall. This race is one of the biggest and most prestigious regattas in the world. Last year we had such an incredible time at the race, and standing on the empty Magazine Beach this weekend makes me even more excited to compete again this year. I think everyone would agree that this race was one of the season highlights from last year. We are so fortunate to have another opportunity to come back.
Talking to Kim this weekend has renewed my passion for the sport of rowing, seeing it from an alumnae's perspective. I am pleased to report that she has decided to pursue her rowing career by accepting the Freshman Men's Heavyweight Intern position at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology under Coach Mike Lane. She promises never to lose her Carolina identity, she is merely a Tar Heel in a Beaver's costume. Congratulations Kim!
Log on next week to see how our first week of practice on the water goes! Have a great week!
Yours in Carolina Blue,
Mer
