Meredith Krull is a senior from Raleigh and a member of the UNC rowing team. Throughout the year, she will provide TarHeelBlue.com readers with an inside look at her team and the experience of being a varsity athlete at North Carolina.
It has been such a thrill to be back on the water and training for our first race against Duke on September 29!
This week has been one of the most challenging and rewarding all at the same time. As each of us readapt to rowing on the water and to our three-hour practices, we find the team making great strides both in the physical and technical aspects of our sport.
For many members of Carolina Rowing, Tuesday was the first time on the water since last May. It soon became clear, however, that all the hard work we put in on the erg made us more powerful and effective on the water.
On Tuesday, we began rowing in our 60-foot-long, eight-person shells. We started off doing lots of steady state rowing in order to get a feel for the boat and at the same time put in a lot of meters on the water. By Saturday morning, we were racing these boats stroke for stroke on University Lake. It was great to end the week on such a high note!
At the end of the week it became clear that our team is both excited about the Fall season and capable of doing some outstanding racing this year. This coming week should be even more exciting as we fine-tune our strokes in preparation for our first race.
I hope many of you will consider attending this race on Lake Michie, September 29th. It would be incredible to have support from our fans when we race Duke on their lake! Check our website for information about starting times and events.
Have a great week!
Mer
