In honor of the late University of North Carolina Chancellor Michael K. Hooker, the Carolina Athletic Association and Carolina Cancer Focus are co-sponsoring the 3rd annual Michael Hooker 5k fun run/walk. The goal this year is to raise $10,000 to be donated in honor of Chancellor Hooker to Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Tony Waldrop, UNC's Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Studies, will be at the race. In 1974, Waldrop won the 1974 NCAA Indoor Mile Championship. He also won 6 ACC titles, a gold medal in the 1,500 meters at the Pan-American Games, and once ran 11 consecutive sub-four minute miles in competitive races. He received All-America honors in cross-country and indoor and outdoor track. Waldrop was named the 1974 ACC Athlete of the Year, was honored by the NCAA for his academic prowess and was awarded the Patterson Medal, symbolic of the University's Most Outstanding Senior Athlete.
