Six points will be on the line this Saturday as the second-annual Carlyle Cup competition gets under way between Carolina and Duke. The Blue Devils play the Tar Heels in field hockey at 1 p.m. at Henry Stadium and Carolina takes on Duke's volleyball team in Durham at 7:30 p.m. Both matches are worth 1.5 points apiece. Meanwhile in men's soccer, The Tar Heels host Duke at Fetzer Field at 7 p.m. in a game that's worth 3 points to the winner.
The Carlyle Cup competition, sponsored by Carlyle & Co. Jewelers, is a yearlong contest in which UNC and Duke teams earn points for head-to-head contests in 20 sports. The school with the most points at the end of the school wins the Carlyle Cup and gets to keep the sterling silver and enamel urn until the end of the next school year.
Last year, the Tar Heels got off to a hot start in the fall before Duke overcame Carolina in the spring and won the competition 27-21.
