Meredith Krull is a senior from Raleigh and a member of the UNC rowing team. Throughout the year, she will provide TarHeelBlue.com readers with an inside look at her team and the experience of being a varsity athlete at North Carolina.
Carolina rowers left the race course Saturday disappointed after the defeat by ACC rivals Clemson and Duke at the Lake Michie Invitational. Although the focus of our training has not been on this particular race, we have been working on performing at our top speed, which did not happen this weekend.
This weekend's regatta was challenging in many ways. Four athletes - Layne Carey, Jeanette Crets, Rebecca Bennett and I - raced in the Varsity 4+, Varsity 8+ and Varsity 2-. Although it was exhausting to race three times, I know it only improved our physical fitness.
Duke and Clemson both came to the regatta prepared physically and mentally. It was clear that Duke had one goal in mind-to dominate the regatta. And they did. As a Carolina athlete, it is very difficult to give Duke credit for their accomplishments. But, in this situation, credit is due.
However, what is important is how we respond to this weekend's events and improve our strength and power. Joel has already indicated that there will be several changes made in order to accomplish this. On Monday, we will take a 6k erg test as a measure of our current physical fitness. I feel confident that Joel and everyone involved with Carolina Rowing will take the necessary measures to ensure our success at the Head of the Charles regatta on October 22.
Thank you to everyone who came to Lake Michie on Saturday. Please keep logging on to track our progress as we prepare for the Head of the Charles.
Yours in Carolina Blue,
Mer
