January 12
1980--Carolina Stuns Top-Ranked Blue Devils
DURHAM, N.C.--North Carolina used a balanced attack and a suffocating defense to topple top-ranked Duke, 82-67, at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Al Wood had 20 points and Dave Colescott added 18 to pace the Tar Heel scoring. Other major offensive contributors were Mike O'Koren with 12, Jimmy Black with 10 and James Worthy and Jimmy Black with eight each.
However, it was on defense where Carolina was at its best. The Tar Heels limited Duke to just 42.5 percent shooting. Mike Gminski hit nine of 18 shots for 18 points, but he was the only Blue Devil player to make at least half of his field goal attempts.
Trailing 18-14 with 10:19 to go in the first half, Carolina reeled off nine straight points. The Tar Heels never trailed again. Worthy started this stretch by spinning inside for a dunk. O'Koren then tied the game by pulling up for a 16-foot jumper on a fast break. Colescott added a free throw after a technical foul.
O'Koren found Black open for a 20-footer on another fast break and Black later added a pair of free throws.
In fact, Carolina converted 30 of 37 foul shots, many out of its four corners offense. Colescott made 10 of 12 free throws and Black hit eight of nine as UNC's principal ballhandlers.
Duke did rally from a 47-34 deficit in the second half to finally tie the game, 56-56. But the Tar Heels immediately scored six straight points as Rich Yonakor fed Wood for a backdoor layup, Colescott got free on a backdoor cut to taking a scoring pass from Wood and Black added two free throws. Carolina then stretched that lead in the final five minutes on layups and free throws.
1998--Tracy Reid Leads Women by Duke, 83-74
CHAPEL HILL--Tracy Reid scored 31 points and grabbed nine rebounds to power seventh-ranked North Carolina to an 83-74 victory over 25th-rated Duke at Carmichael Auditorium.
Reid made 13 of 19 field goal attempts and five of seven free throws for her 31 points. She had 19 in the second half as the Tar Heels held off the Blue Devils in a tight Atlantic Coast Conference showdown.
After taking the lead, 13-12, on a basket by Chanel Wright with 13:09 to play in the first half, Carolina led the rest of the period. The Tar Heels had a 37-34 advantage at intermission.
Duke twice had a one-point lead in the second half, but Jessica Gaspar hit two free throws to wipe out the first and scored on an offensive rebound to push Carolina back ahead on the second occasion.
The Tar Heels eventually built a six-point lead, but the Blue Devils cut that to 65-64 with 5:12 remaining. Reid, Gaspar and Nikki Teasley then took over the game. They scored 17 straight Carolina points to offset just seven points by Duke.
Reid scored on a driving layup and Teasley and Reid each made a pair of free throws. Reid got a layup on a pass from Teasley, Gaspar converted two foul shots and Reid hit a fallaway jumper. Gaspar again hit two free throws. Reid scored on a driving layup, was fouled and added the foul shot.
Gaspar and Teasley each had 15 points for Carolina, while Wright added 12. The Tar Heels shot 52.6 percent from the field.
Michelle VanGorp led the Duke scoring with 21, while Georgia Schweitzer had 20.
January 11
1981--Walsh Stars in Texas Invitational
AUSTIN, Texas--Freshman Sue Walsh won two backstroke events and also swam on a first-place relay team to highlight performances by the North Carolina women's swimming team in the Texas All-America Invitational.
The Tar Heels had 14 top five finishes against the best competition in women's swimming.
Walsh turned in the top accomplishments by taking the 50 and 100 backstrokes and anchoring Carolina's winning 400 freestyle relay team. Her time in the 50 backstroke of 23.91 topped a field of 122 participants. She then set a school and Atlantic Coast Conference record of 56.58 to finish first in the 100.
Joining Walsh on the 400 free relay were Liz Mesmer, Amy Pless and Barb Harris. The winning time was 3:28.04.
Other top five finishes for the Tar Heels included second places by Mesmer (50 free), Gayle Hegel (400 individual medley), Walsh (200 free and 200 back) and the 400 medley relay of Walsh, Hegel, Cami Berizzi and Pless.
The 800 freestyle relay team of Mesmer, Harris, Hegel and Walsh finished third. Berizzi was fourth in the 100 back.
Walsh (200 IM and 100 free), Hegel (100 breastroke) and Berizzi (200 back) took fifth-place honors in those events.
1969--Bunting and Scott Bury Gobblers
CHAPEL HILL--Bill Bunting scored 30 points and Charlie Scott added 23 as North Carolina routed Virginia Tech, 99-77, at Carmichael Auditorium.
Tech actually led this game, 42-41, at the half before the Tar Heels exploded for 58 points in the final 20 minutes.
Bunting hit 11 of 17 shots from the floor and Scott was 10 of 18 as Carolina made52.9 percent of its field goal attempts.
The Tar Heels played without injured center Rusty Clark. Lee Dedmon took his place in the lineup and scored 10 points. Carolina also got 10 points from reserves Joe Brown and Jim Delany.
A key to the comeback win was the Tar Heels' pressure defense that forced 29 Gobbler turnovers.
VPI had five players in double figures, topped by Lloyd King's 17.
January 10
1989--Women Beat Duke in Overtime, 93-92
CHAPEL HILL-- LeAnn Kennedy's short jumper from the lane with 42 seconds to play, lifted the North Carolina women's basketball team to a 93-92 overtime victory over Duke at Carmichael Auditorium.
Tanya Lamb set up the winning basket with a steal. That led to a fast break that Kennedy finished with her jump shot.
Carolina had an 82-80 lead in the closing moments of regulation before the Blue Devils' Ellen Langhi scored with 43 seconds on the clock, forcing the extra period.
Field goals by Liza Donnell and Kennedy helped the Tar Heels take an 87-84 lead early in overtime. Sue Hartnett's layup pulled Duke back to within one point.
Lamb then hit a pair of shots before coming up with the steal that helped seal the win.
Donnell led the Carolina scoring with 25 points, making 10 of 17 shots from the floor. Kennedy made 10 of 15 field goal attempts and finished with 22. Merlaine Oden added 12 points and 13 rebounds.
Hartnett was Duke's leading scorer with 24 points.
1998--Free Throws Help Carolina Stop Virginia
CHAPEL HILL--Antawn Jamison scored 26 points and North Carolina made 35 of 42 free throws to defeat Virginia, 81-73, at the Smith Center.
Jamison made nine of 12 field goal attempts and added eight of 11 free throws to help the Tar Heels improve to 17-0 in a game that featured 47 personal fouls.
Jamison also grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds. Vince Carter added 18 points and seven rebounds, while Ed Cota had 10 points and six assists.
Carolina jumped to an early lead and never trailed in the game.
Norman Nolan scored 29 points for the Cavaliers and Curtis Staples had 20.

1982--Top-Ranked Tar Heels Top No. 2 Virginia
CHAPEL HILL--Top-ranked North Carolina hit 10 straight free throws down the stretch as the Tar Heels defeated second-rated Virginia at Carmichael Auditorium.
Jim Braddock made four consecutive foul shots, while James Worthy, Michael Jordan and Sam Perkins added two each in the final 4:22 as Carolina overcame a nine-point Cavalier lead in the game's last nine minutes.
Carolina still trailed 52-44 when point guard Jimmy Black fouled out with 7:23 left. But, Braddock replaced him and played a big role in the comeback win.
The Tar Heels, who had not led since the 7:22 mark of the first half, finally went back ahead with 3:47 in the game when Worthy hit a turnaround jumper from the baseline. The lead then changed hands three times before Carolina went ahead for good on a pair of free throws by Perkins with 1:48 left.
Braddock then added four straight foul shots for a 63-58 advantage with just 12 seconds on the clock. Virginia's Jeff Jones hit a jumper and Perkins got free for a dunk to close out the scoring.
Ralph Sampson turned in a sensational performance for the Cavaliers with 30 points and 19 rebounds. However, Jones was the second-leading Virginia player with only seven.
Carolina got a more balanced attack as Worthy scored 17, Jordan had 16 and Perkins added 12. Jordan had 12 of his points in the second-half comeback, hitting five of seven shots.
A key to this game was a great defensive performance by Worthy on Craig Robinson, limiting him to just six shots and four points.
1987--Palacio Stars in Virginia Duals
HAMPTON, Va.--Al Palacio, the nation's top-ranked wrestler at 118 pounds, swept three matches as fifth-ranked North Carolina posted a 2-1 record at the Virginia Duals.
The Tar Heels defeated Oregon, 27-9 and 12th-ranked Wisconsin, 23-15, before falling to fourth-rated Oklahoma State, 21-15.
Palacio ran his individual record to 25-0 with a 6-0 win over the Ducks' Robert Pelayo, a 2:14 pin of Wisconsin's Joey Van Dinter and a 7-3 victory over the Cowboys' Ed Woodburn.
Also going 3-0 on the day for Carolina were Chip McArdle at 126 and 142-pounder Lenny Bernstein. Two of Bernstein's wins came while wrestling up a weight.
The match with Oklahoma State wasn't decided until the final bout when OSU's Tom Erickson, the nation's top-ranked heavyweight, won by a technical fall.
