December 22
1978--Colescott Stars Down the Stretch Against Bearcats
CINCINNATI--Dave Colescott scored nine points in the last 7:30 of the game, propelling North Carolina to a 62-59 victory over Cincinnati at Riverfront Coliseum.
It was Colescott's 18-foot jumper that tied the game, 49-49, with 7:30 to play. The Bearcats regained the lead, 54-53, on a Pat Cummings' jumper with 3:35 left.
ut, Colescott drilled a 20-foot shot 18 seconds later and then scored on a backdoor layup as the Tar Heels took a 56-53 lead with 2:21 remaining. Carolina then held off Cincinnati the rest of the way as Colescott made three straight free throws, Rich Yonakor added two and Ged Doughton hit one.
This game was close all the way with neither team leading by more than seven points. The largest lead in the last 14 minutes was three points until the Tar Heels' late free throws. Colescott led the Carolina scoring with 21 points and Al Wood added 18. Cummings was the only Bearcat player in double figures with 28.
1988--Carolina Uses Balanced Attack to Beat Towson
HERSHEY, Pa.--North Carolina placed six players in double figures as the Tar Heels posted a 102-74 victory over Towson State at Hersheypark Arena.
This game was played as a "homecoming" for Carolina's Jeff Lebo from nearby Carlisle, Pa. The 6-2 guard responded by scoring 19 points, including five of eight three-point shots, and making three steals.
Pete Chilcutt came off the bench to score 15, grab 13 rebounds hand out a career-high eight assists. Steve Bucknall, Scott Williams, J.R. Reid and Hubert Dave had 10 points each.
The Tar Heels broke the game open in the first half, building a 48-30 lead in the first 20 minutes. With the score tied, 21-21, and 9:50 remaining, Carolina outscored the Tigers 17-4 to take control of the game. Lebo started this streak with two long three-pointers.
The Tar Heels shot 59.4 percent from the field for the game and out-rebounded Towson State, 52-26. UNC got scoring from 13 different players as Coach Dean Smith substituted freely throughout the game.

2000--Coretta Brown's 27 Points Help Beat Gamecocks
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.--Coretta Brown scored 27 points, leading North Carolina to a
74-68 win over South Carolina at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center.
Brown scored 16 points in the first half as the Tar Heels raced to a 15-point lead, 43-28.
However, South Carolina, who never led in the game, rallied to within a single point, 67-66, with 48 seconds in the game. A jump shot by Brown with 32 seconds to go pushed the lead back to three. Cherie Lea added a free throw with 20 seconds on the clock and Brown followed with two more foul should five seconds later as the Tar Heels pulled away.
Brown hit eight of 18 shots from the floor, including a pair of three-pointers, and made nine of 14 free throws for her 27 points. She also had five rebounds and four assists.
LaQuanda Barksdale finished with 17 points for Carolina. Juana Brown was also in double figures with 10.
Barksdale had 11 of her points in UNC's big first half.
Shaunzinski Gortman topped the South Carolina scoring with 20.
1982--Jordan's Late Spurt Downs Mocs
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.--Michael Jordan scored seven of North Carolina's last nine
points, helping the Tar Heels outlast Tennessee-Chattanooga, 73-66, at the UTC Arena.
This game was played as a homecoming for Tar Heel senior Jim Braddock of
Chattanooga. But, the Mocs almost pulled off an upset win. A 27-point performance by
Jordan and his sensational play in the closing moments helped prevent that.
The two teams played a tight first half with eight lead changes. UT-Chattanooga once had a six-point lead, but Carolina pulled to within 38-34 at the half. Willie White had 18 first-half points to spark the Mocs in the first 20 minutes.
The second half was just as close with the lead changing hands 11 times. Neither team had more than a three-point advantage until the final minute.
A 10-foot jumper by Gerald Wilkins tied the game, 64-64, with 1:16 on the clock. Ten seconds later Jordan drove past Wilkins for a go-ahead basket and was fouled on the play. His free throw gave the Tar Heels a 67-64 edge.
A dunk by Jordan with42 seconds to go gave Carolina its biggest lead of the game. Matt Doherty added a pair of free throws 11 seconds later for a 71-64 lead. A dunk by the Mocs' Stanford Strickland and two Jordan free throws in the final 10 seconds wrapped up the scoring.
Jordan was 11 of 16 from the field and made all five of his foul shots for his 27 points. He also had six rebounds and a pair of steals. Doherty and Sam Perkins each had 16 points and nine rebounds. Braddock had just six points, but handed out a game-high six assists.
White was the only Chattanooga player in double figures, finishing with 26.
December 20
1975--Kupchak, Ford, Davis Star at ETSU
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn.--Mitch Kupchak made 12 of 13 field goal attempts for 24 points
as North Carolina crushed East Tennessee State, 104-67, at Freedom Hall.
Carolina shot 64.1 percent from the floor in rolling to its impressive victory.
In addition to Kupchak, Phil Ford and Walter Davis each hit nine of 11 shots, while Tommy LaGarde was six for 10. Ford finished with 19 points and 11 assists. Davis had 18 points, five rebounds and five assists, while LaGarde added 15 points and 10 rebounds.
Kupchak grabbed 11 rebounds as Carolina dominated the backboards, 50-33. Although John Kuester did not score a point, he had nine assists as the Tar Heels constantly worked the ball inside for easy shots or scored off fast break opportunities.
Carolina never trailed in the game after Ford nailed an 18-foot jumper in the first 20 seconds. The Buccaneers did manage three ties in the early moments. But, with the score 6-6, the Tar Heels scored 10 straight points in less than three minutes to begin pulling away. Davis hit three long jumpers in this stretch, Kupchak, scored on a tap-in and Ford had a layup.
Carolina built a 53-33 lead by halftime. Ford had 15 points in the first 20 minutes, Davis added 14 and Kupchak had 10.
Tar Heel Coach Dean Smith substituted freely throughout the second half as every Tar Heel player except Kuester scored.
1997--Late Free Throws Hold Off Seminoles
TALLAHASSEE, Fla.--North Carolina made seven free throws in the final 1:51 to kill a
Florida State rally and defeat the Seminoles, 81-73, at the Leon County Civic Center.
Trailing by 11 points with 10:21 to play, Florida State pulled to with 66-65 on a layup by Ron Hale with7:06 in the game. But, Ed Cota fed Vince Carter for a dunk and Shammond Williams scored on a layup as Carolina jumped back to a five-point lead. A three-point shot by LaMarr Greer got FSU back to within 74-71 with 2:25 left. The Seminoles eventually were forced to foul to try to cut deeper into the lead. But, Cota hit three free throws and Williams made four straight as the Tar Heels pulled away. Carter and Antawn Jamison each had 22 points for Carolina, while Williams had 18. Cota was sensational with 17 points, 12 assists and only one turnover in 36 minutes of action.
The Tar Heels shot 57.4 percent from the floor with Carter going 10-for-12 and Jamison hitting nine of 16.
December 19
1981--Defense Throttles Rutgers at The Garden
NEW YORK--A suffocating North Carolina defense forced Rutgers into 21.5 percent
shooting as the Tar Heels rolled past the Scarlet Knights, 59-36, at Madison Square
Garden.
Sam Perkins, Matt Doherty and Michael Jordan all scored 15 points for the Tar Heels, but this game was won on the defensive end. Although Rutgers only committed nine turnovers, the Knights could not get off uncontested shots.
Rutgers trailed only 24-19 at halftime, but managed just 16.3 percent shooting in the final 20 minutes.
Leading 29-25 with just over 15 minutes to play, the Tar Heels broke the game wide open by outscoring Rutgers, 18-2 over the next six and a half minutes. Jordan had nine points in this stretch--scoring on a pair of jumpers, a steal and dunk and then a three-point play as he was fouled on a driving layup.
Perkins finished with a game-high 12 rebounds and blocked six shots. Jimmy Black had eight assists.
December 18
1997--Women Edge UCLA in Overtime
CHAPEL HILL--North Carolina rallied from a 14-point second-half deficit for an 82-78
overtime victory over UCLA in a women's basketball game at Carmichael Auditorium.
Tracy Reid, Chanel Wright and Juana Brown all scored 11 points after intermission to
lead the comeback win. It was a free throw by Reid which tied the game, 66-66, and
forced the extra period.
The game was tied on four occasions in overtime, the last time at 74-74 on an offensive rebound by Reid. Jessica Gaspar then made a pair of free throws with 1:28 to play and Brown scored from inside for a four-point lead.
UCLA cut that back to 78-66 on two foul shots by Melanie Pearson. But Brown scored on a fast break, was fouled and added the free throw for a five-point advantage with just 24 seconds remaining. Pearson got a tip-in for the Bruins, but a free throw by Reid iced the game.
Carolina shot just 34.4 percent from the floor in the first half, falling behind, 39-27. UCLA quickly stretched that lead to 14 early in the second half and still led, 60-47, with 7:25 on the clock.
But, the Tar Heels scored 11 straight points in the next 4:27 to pull to within 60-58. Wright started this spurt with a three-point shot and a driving layup. Three free throws by Reid in the final 36 seconds finally tied the game with 15 seconds left in regulation.
Gaspar led the Carolina scoring with 21 points. Wright had 18 and Brown added 17. Reid finished with 13 points, 15 rebounds and five steals.
Pearson topped the Bruin scoring with 23.
1993--Williams Sparks Victory Over Buckeyes
CHAPEL HILL--Donald Williams scored 26 points and freshman Jerry Stackhouse
added 15 as North Carolina defeated Ohio State, 81-68, at the Smith Center.
Williams made nine of 17 shots from the floor and Stackhouse hit five of nine as the Tar
Heels improved to 8-1 on the season.
Carolina scored the first seven points of the game and never trailed after that. The Tar Heels built a 14-point lead with 4:46 to go in the first half before the Buckeyes cut that to 33-39 at halftime. Jamie Skelton, who finished with 27, kept Ohio State in the game with 15 points in the first 20 minutes.
Derek Anderson's jump shot with 7:09 to play finally tied the game, 58-58. But, the Tar Heels then reeled off 11 consecutive points to pull away. Ohio State never got closer that nine points after that.
Williams started the 11-point run with a driving layup. After Stackhouse made a free throw, Williams fired home a three-point shot, got a fast break layup and then made a conventional three-point play when he was fouled on another layup.
December 17
1988--Carolina Blows Out Bruins
CHAPEL HILL--North Carolina raced to a 19-point halftime lead and rolled over UCLA, 104-78, at the Smith Center.
The Tar Heels never trailed in this game, building a 17-point margin in the first nine minutes of play. With Kevin Madden scoring seven points and J.R. Reid scoring six straight from 13:12 to 12:05, Carolina raced to a 28-11 lead.
The Bruins cut that back to 10 points with 1:56 to go before intermission. But, the Tar Heels then scored the final nine points of the half. Hubert Davis fed Madden for a baseline jumper, Jeff Lebo nailed a three-pointer, King Rice had a steal and layup, and Rice then hit Scott Williams for another layup. That gave UNC a 55-36 lead at the half.
UCLA never got closer than 14 (71-57) after intermission. Carolina then went on a 14-1 run over the next 2:31 to wrap up the game.
Running the fast break beautifully and making great passes out of their halfcourt offense, the Tar Heels had 27 assists on 39 field goals. Rice finished with seven of those.
Lebo led a balanced scoring attack with 18 points, followed by Madden with 16, Williams with 15, Steve Bucknall with 14, Pete Chilcutt with 10, Rice with nine and Rick Fox with eight.
Pooh Richardson had 21 for the Bruins.
1985--Tar Heels Outlast Jacksonville, 69-65
JACKSONVILLE, Fla.--North Carolina scored four points in the final 1:57 of the game to edge Jacksonville, 69-65, at the Jacksonville Coliseum.
In a game in which neither team led by more than five points, the Tar Heels got big baskets down the stretch from Kenny Smith, Joe Wolf, Steve Hale and Jeff Lebo to pull out the win.
It was a basket by Hale with 5:34 to play that gave Carolina a 63-59 lead. Otis Smith cut that back to two with a baseline jumper 28 seconds later.
Wolf scored from inside to make it 65-61 with 4:33 on the clock. A Willie McDuffie layup and a slam dunk by Ronnie Murphy tied the game at 65 with 3:39 to play.
The Tar Heels then ran their four-corners offense until Lebo got free for a 20-foot jumper with 1:57 left. The Dolphins could not score on their next possession. Smith then added the final points with a pair of free throws with 11 seconds remaining.
Smith led Carolina with 18 points. Hale had 12 points and five assists, while Wolf scored 10 points and grabbed 13 rebounds.
McDuffie topped the Jacksonville scoring with 16.
December 16
1978--Tar Heels Edge Magic and the Spartans
CHAPEL HILL--North Carolina got 18 points from Mike O'Koren and a sensational defensive performance from Dudley Bradley to defeat Michigan State, 70-69, at Carmichael Auditorium.
Spartan freshman Magic Johnson scored 18 points, but was forced into eight turnovers by Bradley's defensive work. Michigan State outshot Carolina from the field, 56.4 percent to 46.0. However, UNC got more shots by committing just 12 turnovers and forcing 20.
The first half was close for the first13 minutes with Carolina leading 22-18. Al Wood then scored on an offensive rebound and O'Koren hit from inside the lane. The Tar Heel "Blue Team" came on and Ged Doughton buried two straight long jumpers for a 30-18 edge.
Jay Vincent and Terry Donnelly led a late MSU charge that sliced that margin to 34-29 at halftime.
The Tar Heels never trailed in the second half, again building a 10-point lead with 13:04 to play.
Trailing 68-60 with 2:30 left, Greg Kelser and Ron Charles sparked a rally that cut the Carolina lead to the final one-point margin with 25 seconds left. Although the Spartans had possession in the closing seconds they couldn't get a go-ahead basket.
In addition to O'Koren's 18, the Tar Heels got 14 points from Wood and 10 each from Bradley and Dave Colescott. O'Koren also pulled down 10 rebounds and handed out six assists.
Johnson and Kelser topped the MSU scoring with 18 each. Johnson also had six assists and six rebounds.
1968--Balanced Attack Dooms Clemson
CHAPEL HILL--Three North Carolina players scored at least 20 points and the Tar Heels outrebounded Clemson, 53-36, in defeating the Tigers, 90-69, at Carmichael Auditorium.
Bill Bunting scored 21 points and Charlie Scott and Dick Grubar added 20 each to pace the UNC scoring. Rusty Clark had 13 points, while Eddie Fogler contributed 10.
Butch Zatezalo had a game-high 32 for Clemson. Richie Mahaffey was the only other Tiger in double figures with 10.
Rebounding was a big key in this game as Carolina controlled the backboards, 53-36. The Tar Heels got numerous baskets on offensive rebounds. Scott had 13 rebounds and Clark finished with 12.
Carolina also got a number of easy baskets off fast breaks and crisp passing out of its set offense. Fogler dished out 10 assists, Scott had seven and Grubar added six as UNC had 32 assists as a team.
