CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The Duke women's golf team is in first place of the Franklin Street Trust Tar Heel Invitational after shooting a two-over-par 290 in the first round Friday. Duke freshman Liz Janangelo, who leads all individuals, shot a five-under-par 67.
North Carolina, the host school, shot an eight-over-par 296 to claim second place. Ohio State is in third place after finishing with a nine-over 297. Tulane and Oklahoma State are tied for fourth place, each shooting an 11-over-par 299.
Carolina Head Coach Sally Austin described her team's morale after their first round as optimistic.
"We lost a few silly shots coming in, so I think there's room for improvement. They know that and they're excited to be in the position we're in."
Meaghan Francella had the Tar Heels' high score in their first round of play. She is alone in 10th place after shooting an even par 72. UNC's Abby Spector is tied for 11th place with a one-over-par 73. Ashley Prange had the Heels' third best score. She is tied for 15th place, after scoring a two-over-par 74.
Spector had the best shot of the day when she eagled on the eighth for a hole-in-one.
"It was a five iron from about 155 yards, and it took one bounce right in front of the hole and went in," said Spector. With 10 holes left to play, Spector said that while she felt great, she was trying to remain calm and focus on the rest of her round.
In preparation for the second round, Austin wants her team to focus on the present. She doesn't want them to worry about what happened behind them or will happen ahead.
"It's been a challenge for us in the second round sometimes. We want to work on our concentration and focus and stay in the present on every hole."
ehind Janangelo in the individual race is Leigh Turner of Furman. Turner is one shot back after shooting a four-under 68. Also under par for the day are Kristin Tamulis of Florida State and Amelie Farrah of UNC Wilmington. They both shot a 70 and are tied for third place. Five players are tied for fifth place at a one-under-par 71.
The Franklin Street Trust Tar Heel Invitational continues through Sunday and is being played at Finley Golf Course, a par 72, 6,181-yard layout. Tee times begin at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday and at 9 a.m. on Sunday. There is no admission and the public is invited to attend.
