Tar Heels Have Strong Day One At Fall Tournament

Knoxville, TN -- The UNC women's tennis team finished the first day of competition at the 2002 ST. Mary's Women's Fall Tennis Classic undefeated in singles competition and with a strong showing in doubles play.
The Tar Heels kicked off the three-day tournament in Knoxville, Tennessee with a victory by the #8 ranked Kate Pinchbeck. The senior from Edmunton Park, Australia defeated North Carolina State's Myrna Bawono, 6-2, 6-1. Senior Kendrick Bunn and sophomores Aniela Mojzis, and Kendall Cline also picked up victories to advance to the second round of singles action.
In the first round of doubles competition, Mojzis teamed with senior Merlene Mejia to top the team of Anson/Stough from the University of Kentucky, 8-2. Pinchbeck and Bunn then secured Carolina's fifth victory of the first round by besting one of top ACC duos, #25 Causevic/Marker of Maryland, 8-6.
Pinchbeck/Bunn then advanced to the championship round of the Doubles Flight One by defeating Encina/Maharaj of the University of Tennessee, 8-2. Mojzis/Mejia did not fair as well in the second round as they lost to the combo of #23 Castellvi/Shaub also from Tennesse, 8-6.
The Tar Heels will resume play on Saturday morning beginning at 9:30 a.m. The doubles portion of the tournament will conclude on Saturday, while the singles bracket will not conclude until Sunday afternoon.
