Carlyle Cup Competition Heats Up

March 14, 2002
The second annual Carlyle Cup competition heads into the spring season with UNC again holding a large, but tenuous, lead over Duke.
Tar Heel teams have accumulated 18 points to 9.5 for the Blue Devils. There are a total of 48 points at stake, with 24.5 needed to win the cup. Should the two schools finish with 24 points each, the first tiebreaker is most head-to-head games or matches won during the regular season.
A year ago, Duke won the inaugural Carlyle Cup 27-21 after trailing Carolina 17-8 going into the spring season, when the Blue Devils earned three points each in men's lacrosse, women's lacrosse, women's golf, men's tennis, women's tennis and baseball, plus one point in rowing. UNC's spring points came in men's golf (3) and overall track (1).
Duke has been stronger in spring sports in recent years, just as Carolina has dominated the fall sports. Thus, the Blue Devils again have a chance to gain the 15 points needed to retain the cup, which is sponsored by Carlyle & Co. jewelers.
The spring schedule begins Saturday at 1 p.m. with the women's lacrosse match in Chapel Hill. The men's lacrosse match at Duke is Wednesday, March 20, at 7 p.m. Each match is worth 3 cup points.
oth men's and women's tennis matches will be played at Duke this year. The men meet on Wednesday, April 10, at 5 p.m., for 3 points, and the women play on Sunday, April 14, at 1 p.m. for 1.5 points. The Duke women have already won 1.5 points be beating UNC in the ITA Indoor Championships in February.
One point is at stake for the best overall finisher at the ACC Track & Field Championships at Virginia on April 19-20.
The ACC men's and women's golf championships will be also begin April 19 and last three days. The school finishing with the lower total score in the men's and women's team competition will earn the 3 Carlyle Cup points each.
The final event will be baseball, which is also worth 3 points and actually decided last year's cup. The annual three-game series is set for May 11-13 at Duke with games played Saturday afternoon at 1:30 and Sunday and Monday evenings at 7.
A unique aspect of the Carlyle Cup is the "win back" points provision, should Duke and UNC teams meet in head-to-head games or matches during the ACC and NCAA Tournaments. For example, a team that lost 3 points in regular season competition could "win back" 1.5 points if it were to meet and beat its archrival in the post-season.
