1984-Brown's Free Throws Lift UNC Women
With Pam Leake in foul trouble much of the game, the Tar Heels relied on the scoring of Brown, Dawn Royster and Eileen McCann and the playmaking of Pam Hammond to topple the Spartans.
Brown finished with 24 points and 11 rebounds, while Royster had 20 points and 14 rebounds. McCann scored 17 and Hammond handed out nine assists as Carolina improved to 24-7.
After trailing almost the entire game, Michigan State forced overtime when Ann Marie McNamee hit a pair of foul shots with six seconds remaining in regulation. McCann's 25-footer then bounced off the rim as the buzzer sounded.
The Spartans had a 79-77 lead with 58 seconds to go in overtime before McCann calmly fired home an 18-foot jumper. After Michigan State failed to scored on its next possession, Royster was fouled with nine seconds to go. She missed her one-and-one opportunity, but Brown grabbed the rebound and was fouled in the process. She made both of her foul shots.
McNamee got off a shot from the lane with three seconds left, but it failed to drop and Brown pulled in the rebound at the buzzer.
Leake, who fouled out, had only eight points for Carolina. But, the Tar Heels outscored MSU, 18-11, at the foul line, forced 18 turnovers and got the late-game heroics from Brown.
1989-Wyland Wins First Two Matches at NCAA's
The two victories advanced Wyland into the national quarterfinals at 118 pounds.
Wyland, the Atlantic Coast Conference champion, is seeded third in this tournament.
His opening victories came in fairly easy fashion. He won his first match by a technical fall with an 18-3 decision over Liberty's Lauren Baum. He then pinned Adam Derengowski of Rider in 1:25.

1968--Clark Stars in Win Over St. Bonaventure
Clark hit nine of 13 shots from the floor for 18 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in a surprisingly easy rout of the third-ranked Bonnies. The win advanced Carolina to the East Finals for a second straight year.
Lanier finished with 23 points, but was only 10 of 24 from the field. He had nine rebounds, but the Tar Heels dominated the backboards, 53-43.
All-America Larry Miller, always at his best in the biggest games, was dynamic. He made nine of 18 shots, scored a game-high 27 points and grabbed 16 rebounds. Miller and Charlie Scott both scored on a variety of driving layups, seemingly off-balance one-handers and long jump shots.
Scott was also nine of 13 from the floor and had 21 points. Dick Grubar made four of seven shots, scored nine points and teammed with Eddie Fogler to run the Carolina offense.
The Bonnies shot just 38.9 percent from the field as Clark led a stifling Tar Heel defense. UNC meanwhile connected on 52.1 percent of its shots.
The Tar Heels led 40-30 at halftime and pulled away in the second half.
However, even with Miller and Scott weaving their special magic, it was Clark who grabbed the headlines for his great play against Lanier. Lanier, regarded as one of the two or three best big men in the nation, is expected to be one of the top choices in the NBA draft.
But, at least for one night, he was outplayed by the 6-11 Clark, a Morehead Scholar and a second-team All-Atlantic Coast Conference selection.

1987--Reid and Smith Spark Rout of Wolverines
J.R. Reid scored 27 points and grabbed 10 rebounds and Kenny Smith added 22 points to lead the Tar Heel attack. Jeff Lebo scored 16, Scott Williams 11 and Steve
ucknall 10 as Carolina had five players in double figures.
This was a talented Michigan team featuring Gary Grant (24 points), Glenn Rice (22), Antoine Joubert (20) and Loy Vaught (6). But, the Tar Heels held the Wolverines to 38.1 percent shooting in the first half, while making 60.6 percent of their own shots. Carolina led by 23 points in the first 20 minutes before finishing with a 60-43 halftime edge.
Reid had 15 points in that first half and Smith scored 13.
Michigan actually rallied to within six points, 64-58, with 15:58 in the game. But Dave Popson, Reid, Lebo, Smith and Bucknall then led another UNC surge that pushed the Tar Heel advantage back to 21 at 88-67.
Smith nailed five of eight three-point shots and handed out six assists. Reid was nine of 16 from the floor and also made nine of 11 foul shots.
An aggressive Carolina team constantly drove to the basket, drawing fouls. The Tar Heels hit 27 of 36 free throws.
In addition to his 24 points, Grant was credited with 10 assists and also grabbed 10 rebounds from his guard spot for Michigan.

1985--Walt Weiss Stars After Injury
Weiss, a pre-season All-America, had four straight singles, scored three runs, drove in one and stole two bases as Carolina evened its season record at 8-8.
The Tar Heels jumped on Huskie starter Scott Ryan (0-2) for three runs in the first on singles by Glenn Liacouras and Weiss and Scott Johnson's three-run homer.
Carolina added three more runs in the third on run-scoring singles by Matt Merullo, Jon O'Leary and Mike Jedziniak.
Ryan was chased in the fourth when the Tar Heels got their final two runs. Liacouras scored on a Weiss single snd the star shortstop later came home himself on an error.
Williams worked five innings, giving up only a two-out single in the second. He did not walk a batter and struck out six in running his record to 2-1. In four innings of relief, Powell did not give up a hit, walked three and struck out six.

1977--Ford, O'Koren Lead NCAA Win Over Purdue
Ford scored 16 points in the first half, but the Boilermakers still led at intermission, 44-42. The key for Purdue was hitting 14 of 15 free throws in the first 20 minutes.
Carolina was playing without center Tommy LaGarde, who has been sidelined since mid-season with a knee injury, and Walter Davis, who suffered a broken finger in last week's Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament.
But, the Tar Heels battled back from a six-point deficit in the second half to tie the game, 62-62, with 7:09 remaining on a long jumper by Tom Zaliagiris.
Carolina regained possession and tried to spread Purdue out with its four corners offense. The Boilermakers drew a technical foul for failing to force action and Ford's free throw pushed the Tar Heels ahead.
Purdue rallied and had a 66-63 lead with 2:08 left on a Walter Jordan layup. Two foul shots by O'Koren and a 19-foot jumper by Zaliagiris with 1:17 to go regained the lead for the Tar Heels at 67-66.
With 59 seconds on the clock O'Koren made the first of two big defensive plays. He tied up Jordan, forcing a jump ball that he controlled. However, he missed a free throw with 19 seconds left, giving Purdue a chance to win the game.
The Boilermakers took a timeout to set up their final play. O'Koren then ran at Purdue star guard Bruce Parkinson as he was turning after getting the inbounds pass. A surprised Parkinson shuffled his feet and was called for travelling.
Ford hit both ends of a one-and-one free throw opportunity with 10 seconds left, giving Carolina its 69-66 win.
After committing 13 fouls in the first half, the Tar Heels had only four in the second period and the Boilermakers never got back to the free throw line. Jordan led Purdue with 16 points. O'Koren had 11 points for Carolina, while Dudley Bradley had eight points and eight rebounds.
CHAPEL HILL-- Tresa Brown hit two free throws with seven seconds left in overtime, giving North Carolina a narrow 81-79 win over Michigan State in an NCAA Tournament first round game at Carmichael Auditorium.
OKLAHOMA CITY-North Carolina junior Doug Wyland won two matches on the first day of competition in the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships at the Lloyd Noble Center.

CHAPEL HILL-- Shortstop Walt Weiss, who had not started North Carolina's first 15 games because of a back injury, went four-for-four at the plate and Roger Williams and Brad Powell combined on a one-hitter as the Tar Heels pounded Connecticut, 8-0, at Cary Boshamer Stadium.
RALEIGH, N.C.-- Phil Ford scored 27 points and Mike O'Koren made two key defensive plays in the final minute as injured-riddled North Carolina edged Purdue, 69-66, in an NCAA Tournament first-round game at Reynolds Coliseum.
