Durham, N.C. - Duke ended the Tar Heels' hopes of a perfect ACC season and a No. 1 seed in the ACC tournament with a 5-2 defeat Sunday afternoon, ending Carolina's 12-match winning streak.
Carolina scored points at flights three and four with Julie Rotondi and Aniela Mojzis scoring straight set victories after the match had to be moved indoors due to inclement weather. The score stood tied at two after Duke won the doubles point and Carolina followed with victories in two of the first three singles matches.
Duke followed with two consecutive victories, though, clinching at flight one when 3rd-ranked Kelly McCain swept No. 28 Marlene Mejia, 6-4, 6-1.
Kate Pinchbeck also fell short of her bid for a perfect overall season, dropping the final match of the day to Amanda Johnson at flight two, 6-7, 6-1, 6-2. Pinchbeck finishes the regular season with a 22-1 singles record, while the Tar Heels finish at 19-4 and 7-1 in the ACC.
The loss gives 1.5 points to Duke in the Carlyle Cup race which Carolina now leads 24-14. The Carlyle Cup is awarded to the team with the most points based on head-to-head matcups between Carolina and Duke.
The Tar Heels will next see action Friday in the first round of the ACC Tournament. They will face the winner of the 7/8 matchup at noon at the Millbrook Exchange Tennis Center in Raleigh.
