UNC Women Claim ACC Track & Field Crown.

The North Carolina women claimed their second consecutive conference crown at the 2002 ACC Championships held at the University of Virginia on April 19-20. The Tar Heel men finished third in the event.
Carolina won four women's events Saturday to finish with 176.50 points. Florida State (128 points) edged Georgia Tech by one point for second place. NC State (99.50) was fourth followed by Clemson (99),Virginia (92), Maryland (49), Wake Forest (29) and Duke with 18 points.
FSU took the men's championship with 201.50 points. Clemson was second with 158 points and Carolina came in third with 118 points. NC State (103) was fourth followed by Virginia (67.50), Wake Forest (63), Maryland (17) and Duke with 10 points.
Tar Heel sophomore Shalane Flanagan broke her own ACC meet record in the 1500 meters with a NCAA automatic qualifying time of 4:16.19. Teammate Alice Schmidt won her second consecutive 800-meter run with an automatic time of 2:04.74.
Edi Ntuen won the 400-meter dash with an NCAA provisional time of 52.78, and Tiffany Flomo took first in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 58.24, also a provisional time.
Carolina's 4x400-meter relay team of Ntuen, Schmidt, Flomo and Lindsay Bond took first place, and Bond also finished third in the 400-meter hurdles (59.87) and fifth in the 100-meter hurdles (14.01).
Laura Gerraughty was second in the shot put with an automatic result of 53-10 1/4 after finishing second in the hammer and discus on Friday.
Erin Donohue followed Friday's javelin win with a fourth-place finish in the 1500-meter run (4:21.90) and a fifth-place 800-meter showing (2:08.51).
Also for the UNC women, Liz Awtrey took fourth in the 5000-meter run with a provisional time of 16:42.41, and Ibiene Bilaye-Benibo placed third in the shot put with a provisional mark of 48-11 3/4.
Tatyana Kirichenko placed fourth in the high jump (5-3 3/4) and fifth in the heptathlon (4,581 points). Kiera Underwood took second in the heptathlon (4,857).
In the triple jump, Lashawn Gee jumped 39-0 1/2 to place fourth.
Sal Gigante followed Friday's discus title with a win in the shot put (58-0 1/2) and a second place in the hammer (191-0). Teammate Ian Douglas finished second in the shot at 57-2 3/4.
Adam Shunk and Michael Cvelbar each met provisional marks in winning their respective events. Cvelbar placed first in the decathlon with 7,211 points and Shunk won the high jump with a height of 7-3 3/4. John Hubbard was third in the high jump at 6-10 3/4.
Three Tar Heels placed in the triple jump -- Mark Curry (5th, 48-4 1/2), Blair Woodward (6th, 48-2 1/2) and Hubbard (7th, 47-9).
Also for the Tar Heel men, Doug Smith took fifth in the 800-meter run (1:51.13) , and Kevin Watson finished eighth in the 110-meter hurdles (14.71).
Brent Callaway won the men's pole vault at a height of 17-2 3/4 on Friday.
