RALEIGH, N.C.-- The bottom of the lineup proved to be the key today for the Tar Heels in their 4-1 victory over Wake Forest in the semifinals of the ACC tournament at the Millbrook Exchange Tennis Center. Carolina made quick work of the fourth-ranked Demon Deacons thanks to straight set victories at flights four through six and easy doubles victories at flights two and three.
Lee Bairos made quick work of Katie Martzolf, 6-2, 6-0 at flight five to score Carolina's first singles victory, while Aniela Mojzis and Kendall Cline followed shortly with straight set victories. Bairos had lost a tough match to Martzolf earlier in the season and credited a more focused effort for her easy victory today.
"I just played a different game today," Bairos said. "I moved her around and wasn't thinking about the match too much."
Head Coach Jen Callen congratulated the entire team for a complete effort against one of the nation's top teams.
"It was a great team effort today," Callen said. "I knew we were capable of playing this well. Today was our best performance and I'm looking forward to our great opportunity tomorrow."
Callen was speaking of the ACC Championship final against Duke, scheduled for 11 a.m. at the Millbrook Exchange Tennis Center on Sunday. This will be the third time Carolina has faced Duke this season, who is responsible for two of the Tar Heels' four losses.
