Hello Carolina Rowing fans!
Today we returned to Chapel Hill after a bus ride through the night from Miami. We are, for the most part, a tired group of girls. We're tired in the good way, though, the way that is a by-product of having gone hard and nonstop and having gotten a lot of good work done over the course of the week.
We traveled to Miami from Tampa on Thursday and arrived in the early afternoon. We had a pasta dinner with the other teams--Navy, the University of Central Florida, the University of Miami and Syracuse--that were there for training and racing also. After that, many of us made a trip to Dairy Queen and then took a short walk down the beach in front of the hotel before retiring to bed early in preparation for Saturday's races.
Saturday morning, we arrived at the boathouse by 7 a.m. The first and second varsity eights and the first novice eight raced two times each and the novice four and a second novice eight raced once each. The only win of the day was posted by the first varsity eight in the first race of the day against Navy and UCF. It was a day of learning for all of us. Official times and results can be found at this link.
The rest of the day was spent on the beach and in the hotel before meeting for a steak dinner as a team. Having eaten a lot of pasta all week, the dinner was much appreciated. We had a short team meeting before falling into bed after another long day.
Saturday, our final day of spring training, Joel gave us a chance to just enjoy being in Miami, having worked hard all week. Many of us played on the beach in front of our hotel for the first part of the day, then headed to South Beach in the late afternoon for dinner. It was all very pleasant.
This week we will resume our normal practice schedule and prepare for our next race, the San Diego Crew Classic in California, in just three short weeks (April 6 and 7). The novices will be racing before then at the Crawford Bay regatta in Portsmouth, Va., this coming Saturday, March 23.
Your Tar Heel Pal,
Yoder
