Carolina Stands Second In Final Winter Sears Cup Rankings

CLEVELAND, OHIO - The University of North Carolina athletic program ended the 2001-02 winter sports season in the same place it ended the 2001-02 fall sports season in the Sears Directors' Cup standings--second place.
The final winter standings were released Thursday by the National Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) office in Cleveland, Ohio.
Stanford, which has been the Sears Cup champion every year since 1994-95, leads the current standings with 1,125 points. The Cardinal has a significant lead over the second place Tar Heels, winner of the inaugural Sears Directors' Cup in 1993-9, as UNC has 715 points in the latest standings.
ig Ten Conference teams are third and fourth with Minnesota third with 659.5 points and Michigan fourth with 609 points. Florida rounds out the Top 5 with 601 points. The remainder of the Top 10 includes Texas with 568.5, Penn State with 553, UCLA with 542, Colorado with 541 and Oklahoma with 525.
Other Atlantic Coast Conference teams include Virginia in 19th with 412, Maryland in 28th with 361.5, Clemson in 39th with 296, Duke in 40th with 290.5, Wake Forest in 52nd with 220, NC State in 54th with 215 and Georgia Tech in 98th with 113.
UNC scored in eight sports during the winter sports season as the Tar Heels were fifth in women's indoor track, ninth in women's basketball, 12th in men's indoor track, 13th in women's swimming, 17th in fencing, 31st in both men's swimming and women's gymnastics and 37th in wrestling.
There will be three sets of spring sports rankings issued by NACDA with partial spring totals on May 30 and June 18 and the final standings released June 25.
