Flanagan Named Outstanding College Relay Runner At Penn Relays

UNC sophomore Shalane Flanagan was named the outstanding women's college relay runner at the 2002 Penn Relays in Philadelphia. Flanagan earned the honor after anchoring Tar Heel victories in the distance medley and 4x1500 meter relay championship races.
The UNC distance medley relay team ran a school record time of 11:00.33 to defend its DMR Championship of America title. The DMR team of Flanagan, Erin Donohue, Anissa Gainey and Alice Schmidt finished ahead of second place Stanford (11:10) by almost 10 seconds and beat the old UNC mark by almost three seconds. The splits were - Donohue, 3:25 in the 1200-meters; Gainey, 52.9 in the 400-meters; Schmidt, 2:06.9 in the 800-meters; Flanagan, 4:35.1 in the 1600-meters. This is UNC's second consecutive Penn Relays title in the event.
Flanagan also teamed with Schmidt, Donohue and Carol Henry to win the 4x1500 meter Championship of America event. The Tar Heels ran a 17:33.67 to beat second-place Stanford (17:36.66) by three seconds.
ACC Rookie of the Year Laura Gerraughty had an impressive showing at the Relays, taking first place in the championship division of the shot put with a throw of 56-4 ˝ and first place in the college hammer division with a distance of 192-11. Gerraughty added a 4th place showing of 170-9 in the discus championship to add to her Penn Relays' tally.
Amy Parulis joined Gerraughty in the hammer, finishing 10th at 172-7.
Tar Heels throwers Sal Gigante and Vikas Gowda placed third and fourth in the discus championship at 183-11 and 181-4, respectively. Gigante also took ninth in the championship hammer at 194-7, and Ian Douglas finished sixth in the shot put championship with a distance of 60-6 ľ.
Also for UNC on in the field events, Adam Shunk finished in a third-place tie in the high jump championship with a height of 7-1 ľ, and Blair Woodward took third in the college long jump at 24-5 ľ and 15th in the college triple jump at 46-5 Ľ. John Hubbard tied for seventh in the college high jump competition at a height of 6-7 ˝, while Shannon Burns placed ninth in the championship triple jump with a mark of 39-6.
Liz Awtrey placed third in the 3000-meter steeplechase championship with a time of 10:29.10, and Tiffany Flomo finished 13th in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles at 1:00.45.
Two other Carolina relay teams had top-seven finishes. The UNC women's 4x200 squad of Gainey, Flomo, Lindsay Bond and Kiera Underwood placed sixth in the Championship of America relay at 1:37.58, and the men's 4x800 relay team of Bobby Moffat, Doug Smith, Hunter Graham and Steven Edwards ran a 7:36.84 to finish seventh.
