UNC Softball Sweeps Doubleheader At Campbell

BUIES CREEK, N.C. - The University of North Carolina softball team (27-21) swept a non-conference doubleheader against Campbell University (23-25) at the Eakes Athletic Fields, Tuesday. UNC won game one, 8-5, and game two, 6-1.
In game one, UNC used a five-run third inning to knock off the Camels. The Heels were led by Tiffany Tolleson who was 3-4 in game one and scored two runs.
The Camels took the lead early by pushing three runs across in the bottom of the first inning. Jessica Waters led the inning off with a single and scored on an RBI double by Shannon O'Bryan. O'Bryan later scored on a single to right by Campbell pitcher Holly Harris. Tiffany Moyer followed with an RBI triple down the right field line to put the Camels on top 3-0.
Campbell's lead did not last long as the Tar Heels exploded for five runs on four hits in the top of the third inning. Emily Price started things off for the Heels with a triple and scored on a RBI single from Tolleson. UNC scored four more in the inning, including two on a two-run home run by Natalie Anter, her 13th of the season.
UNC added another run in the top of the fourth inning. Tolleson reached on an infield single and advanced to third on a Camel throwing error. Tolleson scored on an RBI single from Quinn Porter that put the Heels on top 6-3.
The Camels were able to get within a run in the bottom half of the sixth. Brooke Osterhage reached on an infield single and later scored on an RBI single by Moyer. Moyer scored the fifth run of the game for the Camels on an RBI single by Lisa Evans.
North Carolina extended its lead in the top half of the seventh, scoring two runs to make the score 8-5.
Harris suffered the loss, dropping to 8-7 on the year. She worked just two and one-third innings, giving up four hits and allowing five runs. UNC freshman Ashley Allen improved to 10-6 on the year, allowing nine hits while striking out two.
Game two was scoreless until North Carolina put three runs on the board in the top of the fifth inning. Shannon Walsh and Natashalyn Snipes collected back-to-back singles before Tolleson hit an infield single. UNC cleared the bases on a Campbell throwing error.
UNC added two runs in the sixth inning before Campbell scored its only run of the game when Carolyn Fortney hit her second homerun on the year with a blast over the left field fence.
North Carolina collected four singles in row to add an insurance run in the top of the seventh, making the score 6-1.
Walsh earned the win to improve to 11-10. She allowed one run and four hits while striking out six. Kathy Freaney suffered the loss and dropped to 9-11 on the year. She allowed six runs on 11 hits and struck out eight.
