Tar Heels Maintain Second Place In Sears Cup Standings

Cleveland, Ohio - Seven-time Division I Sears Directors' Cup champion Stanford University, leading by 399 points at the close of the winter championship season, has now pushed its lead to 480 points as the spring championship season begins. The Sears Directors' Cup is presented by the nation's athletics directors.
The University of North Carolina continues to hold on to second place in the standings with 889.5 points. Stanford won two national titles, in women's tennis and water polo, to go along with an 11th place finish in women's golf and a 17th place showing in men's tennis to post 1,369.5 points. The inaugural winner, North Carolina, follows with 889.5 points. The Sears Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. It is administered by NACDA and sponsored by Sears, Roebuck and Co.
So far in spring sports, UNC has received points in women's lacrosse (third place), women's tennis (fifth place), men's tennis (33rd place) and women's golf (46th place).
Florida is in third with 818.5 points; followed by UCLA, in fourth with 810 points; and, Texas in fifth with 751.5 points. This is the first set of spring standings and includes the sports of women and men's tennis; women's golf, lacrosse and water polo; and men's volleyball. In addition to Stanford, winning national championships were Southern California in men's tennis; Duke in women's golf; Princeton in women's lacrosse; and Hawaii in men's volleyball.
Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 20 sports -- 10 for men and 10 for women. Each national champion receives 100 points.
The remainder of the Top 10 includes Michigan in sixth place (736), Minnesota in seventh place (689.5), Tennessee in eighth place (641.5), Georgia in ninth place (637 points) and Arizona in 10th place (621 points).
Amongst other Atlantic Coast Conference schools, Duke is 19th, Virginia 31st, Maryland 34th, Wake Forest 37th, Clemson 41st, NC State 52nd, Florida State 58th and Georgia Tech 88th.
