University of North Carolina athletics continued its tradition of excellence with another championship season in 2001-02.
The Tar Heels finished No. 4 in the annual Sears Cup competition and garnered seven ACC championships to lead the conference in team titles for the 15th consecutive year.
Of Carolina's 28 varsity sports programs, 22 qualified for NCAA postseason play, including Elmar Bolowich's men's soccer team, which won its first national title. Meanwhile, seven programs posted Top 10 finished in NCAA competition, while the football team won the Peach Bowl in head coach John Bunting's first season back at his alma mater.
