Monroe Excels On Summer Tennis Circuit

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - University of North Carolina junior men's tennis player Nicholas Monroe of Olathe, Kan. had a tremendous summer of competition as he qualified for the main draw in five of the six ATP Future's Event he played around the country. Monroe's best finish was a quarterfinal placing in the $10K Futures played in Peoria, Ill.
Monroe scored victories this past summer over several players ranked in the ATP and Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings. He defeated Chad Carlson, the former #2 player at the University of Georgia and currently the #430 player on the ATP Tour. He had wins over Danny Westerman, ranked 29th in the ITA rankings, Ytai Abougzir, Jason Marshall, a former #1 player at Purdue University, and Morgan Wilson, the #760 player on the ATP tour.
Monroe is one of five returning starters for Coach Sam Paul's defending Atlantic Coast Conference championship team in 2002-03.
