50th Anniversary Men's Cross Country Team

Greensboro, N.C.-- The Atlantic Coast Conference 50th Anniversary Team was announced today by Commissioner John Swofford. The 54-member team was voted on by nine league institutions as decided on by the league's 50th Anniversary Committee.
NC State led all league schools with 13 members on the Golden Anniversary team, while North Carolina was second with 12 honorees. Clemson had 10 players selected, followed by Wake Forest (7), Duke (6), Maryland (3), Virginia (2) and Georgia Tech with one.
The 12 Tar Heels that were selected to the Anniversary Team are: Jim Beatty (1954-56), Wayne Bishop (1958), John Cline (1994-97), Jim Cooper (1979-80, 1982), Jim Farmer (1984-87), Larry Henry (1958-61), Gary Hofstetter (1977-80), Ralph King (1975-78), Art Maillet (1963-64), George Nicholas (1983-86), Tony Waldrop (1971-74) and Andre Williams (1994-97).
Beatty dominated the sport in the early 1950's. He won three ACC Championships and was named All-America in 1954 and 1956.
Bishop was an ACC Champion in 1958.
Cline won the ACC Championship in 1997, posting the fastest time in the event since 1991. He finished second out of 202 runners at the NCAA District III Championship and was named All-American in 1997.
Cooper finished in the top 10 in the ACC Championship in 1979, 1980 and 1982.
Farmer was named All-American for the Tar Heels in 1984 and 1985. Henry won the ACC Championship for Carolina in 1962.
Hofstetter was All-ACC for two straight seasons in 1978 and 1979, along with being named All-American in 1979.
King won the ACC Championship in 1977 and also was named to the '77 All-America team.
Maillet won the 1963 ACC Championship on his way to being named All-ACC. Nicholas finished in the top 10 for the 1984 ACC Championship and earned All-America honors in 1985.
Waldrop had an 11th place finish at the NCAA Championship for the Tar Heels, and was named All-American in 1971.
Williams won the ACC Championship in 1992 and won four individual cross country events in 1991, earning All-ACC and All-District honors.
