Ten University of North Carolina softball players have been selected for the Atlantic Coast Conference's 50th Anniversary Team, announced Thursday by the ACC. UNC tied for the second most selections on the team with Virginia. Florida State led the way with 24, Maryland had five and Georgia Tech had three.
"It's been fun to look through the ACC's list and remember the contributions all these players have made to our program," said UNC coach Donna Papa, who is in her 18th year at UNC and coached all 10 of the Tar Heels honored. "Not to take anything away from other players, but these 10 certainly stand out. They've been great representatives our program and I'm very excited for them that they've been honored as members of this prestigious group."
Natalie Anter was one of five seniors on last year's team, which finished as the ACC runner-up. The 2001 team, which included ACC honorees Anter, Radara McHugh and Michelle Semmes, won the conference championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament, both program firsts.
Anter is the only Tar Heel and one of only two players on the list to earn recognition based on only part of her career. The nomination and selection processes for the ACC 50 team took place early in the spring of 2002, prior to Anter's senior season, so only her freshman, sophomore and junior seasons were taken into account. As a senior, she earned All-Southeast Region, All-ACC and All-ACC Tournament honors and set school records for home runs and walks in a season. She left UNC as the school's career leader in home runs, RBI, at-bats, total bases, walks and games played.
Following is the complete list of Tar Heel honorees:
