Monroe Moves Into Round Of 16 At ITA Regional

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina senior Nick Monroe has advanced to the Round of 16 in singles in the ITA Region II Championships presented by Cafe Carolina and Bakery Friday at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. Monroe, a native of Olathe, Kan., defeated Marko Rajevac of Georgia Tech and Jeff Groslimond of Florida State on Friday and will play Stephen Rozek of Virginia Saturday in the round of 16.
Three other Tar Heels advanced out of first round play on Friday but fell in the second round to seeded players.
Monroe, the No. 3 seed, started the day with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Rajevic and then defeated Groslimond 6-4, 6-1 in the second round.
UNC's Andy Metzler started the day with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Danilo Mendes of UNC Wilmington but fell in the second round to the No. 4 seed, Clemson's Nathan Thompson, by a tally of 6-1, 6-3.
Carolina junior Jonathan Janda, who advanced to the main draw via the Qualifying Singles Tournament, won in the first round over Peter Jakubek of Norfolk State 7-6, 6-2. In the second round, No. 11 seed Derrick Spice of Wake Forest downed Janda 6-2, 6-3.
UNC's Raian Luchici defeated George Mason's Tito Ballester of George Mason 6-1, 6-1 in the first round. In the second round, Duke's Ludovic Walter, seeded No. 2 in the tournament, ousted Luchici by a 7-5, 6-2 score.
