Senior UNC cross country runner Shalane Flanagan has won the Honda Sports Award for cross country for the second consecutive year. Flanagan won her second cross country national title on Nov. 24, leading to the Board of Directors of the Collegiate Women Sports Awards decision to select Flanagan as the recipient of the Honda Sports Award. By winning the award, Flanagan is nominated as a candidate for the The Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year and The Honda-Broderick Cup, the top award for collegiate women athletes. The American Honda Motor Co., Inc., will donate $5,000 to the women's athletic program at Carolina in honor of Flanagan winning the Honda Award.
Flanagan's impressive collection of awards throughout her career continues to grow. In her four cross country seasons, Flanagan has won four ACC titles, four Southeast Regional Championships, two NCAA Championships and now two Honda Awards. She is the third athlete in the award's history, to be honored in back-to-back years.
Flanagan won the cross country NCAA Championship with a 6K time of 19:30.4, which was 12 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher. Flanagan will sit out the 2004 indoor and outdoor track seasons at Carolina, in order to focus on training for the Olympic Trials. She has gathered four NCAA Championships in track and field events in her career and will look to add an Olympic accomplishment to her ever-growing list of athletic achievements.
Flanagan is one of 12 sport winners to be a candidate for the Honda-Broderick Cup. Past winners of the Cup include Mia Hamm, Jackie Joyner, Nancy Lieberman and Cheryl Miller. The winner will be selected in June, 2004.
