
Women's Tennis Falls to No. 4 Duke 6-1

Madison, Wis. - The fifth-ranked University of North Carolina women's tennis team (5-1) received its first loss of the season Friday evening in the quarterfinals of the ITA National Team Indoor Championships. Fourth-ranked rival Duke University (6-0) defeated the Tar Heels 6-1 at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison, Wis.
Carolina's only point of the match came at the No. 3 singles position, where #61 Aniela Mojzis upset #38 Julie DeRoo of Duke 6-3, 7-6(4). In No. 2 doubles action, #50 Mojzis and Marlene Mejia also upset Duke's #11 DeRoo and Amanda Johnson 8-7. However, the Blue Devils claimed the doubles point with wins at the two remaining doubles spots. Duke's #13 pair of Kelly McCain and Hillary Adams defeated #19 Kate Pinchbeck and Kendrick Bunn 8-5 at the No. 1 doubles position, and the #49 Duke pair of Katie Granson and Julia Smith defeated Lee Bairos and Kendall Cline 8-5 at the No. 3 doubles position.
In fierce singles play, #65 Smith of Duke edged by Cline at the No.4 position 6-7(5), 7-6(5), (15-13). At No. 2, #15 Johnson was able to overcome #38 Mejia 1-6, 6-4, 6-2. Carolina's Bairos also lost a hard-fought battle in three sets at No. 5 to Duke's #81 Katie Blaszak 6-7(2), 6-2, 6-4. #2 McCain defeated Carolina's #11 Pinchbeck 6-3, 6-2 at No.1, and Duke's #98 Granson defeated Bunn 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6.
With the victory, Duke receives 1.5 points in the Carlyle Cup standings, cutting the UNC lead to 12.5-10. The Carlyle Cup is a yearlong competition between North Carolina and Duke. It is sponsored by Carlyle & Company based out of Greensboro, N.C.
The arch-rivals will meet again March 20 at 3 p.m. in Chapel Hill for Atlantic Coast Conference action.
