Carolina Upsets No. 19 Michigan

AUSTIN, Texas -- The University of North Carolina softball team picked up its first win against a ranked opponent this afternoon with a 3-1 victory over No. 19 Michigan. The Tar Heels used four hits in the third inning to jump out 2-0 and collected an insurance run in the seventh to defeat the Wolverines. North Carolina improves to 9-7, while Michigan falls to 6-6.
The Tar Heels struck first against the Wolverines scoring two runs in the top of the third inning. Senior Tiffany Tolleson (Winter Haven, Fla.) began the inning with a base hit and a three base throwing error by Michigan to score the first run of the game as UNC led 1-0. Freshman Jaclyn Holden (Santa Clarita, Calif.) singled with runners on the corner to provide Carolina with its second run of the ballgame as the Tar Heels led U of M 2-0.
Michigan began the fourth inning with a home run by Marissa Young and a double by Monica Schock. The Wolverines put the next hitter on with a walk and had first and second with no outs. The Tar Heels picked up an out on a sacrifice and the Wolverines loaded the bases with one out with another walk. Freshman Alison Yin (Glendale, Calif.) came into the game for UNC and shut the door on the Wolverines in the fourth inning.
The Tar Heels put their leadoff hitter on in the seventh inning as freshman Megan Welch (Anaheim Hills, Calif.) reached on an error and advanced to second on a sacrifice. Senior Quinn Porter (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) slugged a triple with two outs to give the Tar Heels a two-run lead, 3-1.
Yin finished the game pitching 3.2 innings, giving up no runs and just one hit to improve to 4-0 on the season.
Carolina scored three runs, on seven hits and one error, while Michigan scored one run, on five hits and three errors.
Porter and Holden led the Tar Heels offensively. Porter went 2-for-3 with a triple and an RBI, while Holden finished 2-for-4 with one RBI.
Carolina will face Michigan tonight at 7 p.m. in bracket play. The winner of that game will play in the championship game Sunday, March 2 at 12:30 p.m. CST. The consolation game of the tournament will be at 10:30 a.m. tomorrow morning.
