Carolina Falls Victim To Long Ball Versus No. 4 Washington

PLANT CITY, Fla. - The University of North Carolina softball team dropped its fourth straight game to No. 4 Washington, 4-0, to end the Speedline Invitational this afternoon. The Tar Heels gave up three solo home runs in the game as the fourth-ranked Huskies ended pool play 4-1. UNC falls to 10-13, while Washington improves to 21-1-1.
Washington put a run on the board in the first inning taking advantage of a Tar Heel error to grab a 1-0 lead. The Huskies took a 2-0 advantage on a solo home run by Sarah Hyatt in the second inning. UW's Kristen Rivera hit a solo home run to left field in the top of the third inning to give Washington a 3-0 lead.
Hyatt struck the Tar Heels again with her second homer of the game in the top of the seventh inning to extend the Tar Heel deficit to four, 4-0.
Junior Emily Price (Decatur, Ill.) reached on an error and junior Jessica Graziano (Pearl River, N.Y.) singled to put runners on first and second with no outs in the bottom of the seventh. However, the Tar Heels could not push a run across falling to the Huskies 4-0.
Carolina had four hits and one error, while Washington scored four runs, on five hits and two errors.
Leading the Tar Heels at the plate was senior Tiffany Tolleson (Winter Haven, Fla.). Tolleson was a perfect 3-for-3 for the game. Freshman Alison Yin (Glendale, Calif.) pitched all seven innings, allowing five hits, four runs and three earned runs to fall to 4-2.
North Carolina will return to Chapel Hill to host Furman and Charlotte Wednesday, March 12 and Thursday, March 13. Furman and Carolina will battle at 2 p.m. and the Tar Heels and 49ers will begin at 3 p.m. The doubleheaders will be played at the UNC Softball Complex.
