Tar Heels Advance To ACC Tournament Quarterfinals

RALEIGH, N.C. - The seventh-seeded (No. 44 ranked) North Carolina men's tennis team won its opening round match in the 2003 Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Tennis Championship this morning 4-0 over the NC State Wolfpack at Millbrook Exchange Park. Carolina advances to the quarterfinals where the Tar Heels will meet Clemson Friday at 12 noon. Should Friday result in inclement weather the match will be played on the Indoor Courts at Duke University.
Carolina claimed the doubles point with wins by 25th-ranked Trystan Meniane and Nicholas Monroe at No. 1 and Andrew Metzler and Daniel Pinchbeck at No. 3.
The Tar Heels then won the three necessary singles matches in straight sets while the other three were suspended because of the Tar Heel clinching point.
Menaine beat R.J. Murray at No. 1 by 6-1, 6-3, sophomore Geoff Boyd whipped Chris Mills 6-3, 6-1 at No. 6 and Metzler clinched the match with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Will Shaw at No. 3.
Carolina improved to 11-10 on the season while the Wolfpack likely saw their season end at 5-17.
