Raleigh, N.C. ------ The No. 11 University of North Carolina women's tennis team defeated 49th-ranked Florida State, 4-0, in the quarterfinals of the Atlantic Coast Conference women's tennis tournament at the Duke University Tennis Center on Friday. The match was moved from Raleigh's Millbrook Exchange Park due to rain.
The Tar Heels' victory sets up a semifinal match against No. 16 Clemson, which will be played in Raleigh, weather permitting. Carolina won the ACC title last season and is vying for its sixth overall conference crown in women's tennis.
"Florida State is much better than their ranking and we had to play very well today to win," said UNC head coach Jen Callen. "Our team is playing well right now, they are playing gutsy tennis and building confidence. We are looking forward to our match with Clemson tomorrow."
Carolina won the doubles point in today's match by claiming victories at the No. 1 postion behind the power of the 16th-ranked tandem of Aniela Mojzis and Kendall Cline, and No. 3 positions (Kate Pinchbeck and Kendrick Bunn). In singles action, Mojzis gave the Tar Heels a 2-0 lead with an easy 6-0, 6-0 victory at the third singles flight. Carolina also scored victories at No. 4 singles and Lee Bairos clinched the match with a win at No. 5. Carolina was winning in two of the other three singles when the match ended.
"We got off to a good start in doubles and that carried over into our singles play," said Callen. "Aniela is playing some of the best tennis of her career and I was proud of the way Kendall fought back in the first set. As a team we continue to give great effort and that was apparent today."
In their most recent meeting, Carolina lost at Clemson, 4-3, on April 13. In that match, Carolina was without its top player, Kate Pinchbeck, who was out with sickness.
