
California Downs North Carolina in NCAA Women's Tennis, 4-1

GAINESVILLE, FL. - The fourth ranked California Golden Bears defeated the University of North Carolina women's tennis team, 4-1, at the NCAA championship at the Ring Tennis Complex in Gainesville, Florida.
The number one California doubles team won the first match 8-3, but the Tar Heels came back to win the second match 8-6. The third match went to a 7-2 tie-breaker and North Carolina finished with a winning score of 9-8 to claim the doubles point.
California's Jody Scheldt won the Bears' first singles match defeating Lee Bairos 6-3, 6-3. Raquel Kops-Jones continued California's success with a win in the No. 1 singles match over North Carolina's Kate Pinchbeck 6-4, 6-2. Cal's Jieun Jacobs who also won the No. 4 match over Kendall Cline, 6-4, 6-4.
The No. 6 singles match went into three sets as California's Nicole Havlicek lost the first set 3-6 to Kendrick Bunn. Havlicek came back to win the final two sets 6-2, 7-5 in two hours and 25 minutes to seal the victory for the Golden Bears.
Head Coach Jennifer Callen stated, "I was pleased with their performance today. I thought that they played better than we played Cal last time, and we also played very well in doubles."
On California's performance Coach Callen noted, "Cal played really well in singles and they hung in there and fought well. It was a great match. Cal was the better team today and they deserve the credit. They played with a lot of class and it was a good fought match."
