Schmidt Reaches Final, Shunk Shares Lead in High Jump

Shunk, a senior from Muncie, Ind., cleared 7-1 3/4 on his second attempt. He is one of nine men to clear that height. Shunk was one of 19 who advanced to Saturday's championship round. He won the 2003 indoor high jump title and is the ACC outdoor champion.
Schmidt won her heat for the second consecutive day and advanced to Saturday's final which will begin at 11:20 p.m. Eastern Time. The Omaha, Neb., native ran 2:04.17. Becky Lyne of Butler ran 2:03.88 to win the second heat. Lyne is the only competitor to post a time lower than Schmidt.
Sophomore Laura Gerraughty advanced to the finals in both the hammer and shot put. The Nashua, N.H., native qualified third in the shot (56-1) and sixth in the hammer (204-8). Becky Breisch of Nebraska (56-7 1/2) and Jillian Camarena of Stanford (56-6 1/2) qualified ahead of Gerraughty in the shot. Three University of Florida Gators were among the five to place qualify ahead of her in the hammer. Gerraughty's hammer toss of 204-8 was just one foot off her personal best and school record mark.
Sophomore Vikas Gowda advanced to the finals of the men's discus with a throw of 187-8. He is one of 12 who will participate in Saturday's final. Gowda reached the final with his final throw of the qualifying round.
Tatyana Kirichenko tied for 27 in the pole vault and did not advance to the final, despite clearing a UNC record height of 12-9 1/2.
Amy Parulis (18th, 187-0) and Ibiene Bilaye-Benibo (20th, 185-11) did not advance in the hammer, Erin Donohue (16th, 4:19.09) and Carol Henry (17th, 4:19.65) did not move on the 1500 meters and the women's 4x400 relay qualified 18th and did not advance (3:40.90).
Anissa Gainey was fifth in her heat in the 400 and 26th overall (54.22 seconds) and did not advance. Tiffany Flomo (fourth in heat, 18th overall, 59.65 seconds) and Karen Wyzykowksi (19th, 146-7) did not advance in the 400 hurdles and javelin, respectively, late Wednesday evening.
Shalane Flanagan did advance to the finals of the 5000 meters late Wednesday. Flanagan was third in her heat and posted the fifth fastest time overall in 16:19.12. Flanagan, the 2002 NCAA cross country champion and 2003 indoor 3000 champion, will compete for her third individual title of the season on Saturday at 11:40 p.m. Eastern Time.
