CHAPEL HILL --The 2002-03 academic year was another successful one for the University of North Carolina Department of Athletics. Four Tar Heel teams won Atlantic Coast Conference championships. Meanwhile, cross country and women's track and field star Shalane Flanagan won three NCAA championships in '02-'03.
Fourteen Carolina teams earned bids to the NCAA Tournament or ranked in the top 25 at the NCAA Championships in their respective sport: women's cross country, men's soccer, women's soccer, volleyball, women's basketball, men's indoor track and field, women's indoor track and field, baseball, men's golf, women's golf, softball, men's tennis, women's tennis and women's outdoor track and field.
The 2002-03 academic year was also another stellar one for UNC student-athletes in the classroom. The ACC Honor Roll, which includes those student-athletes with a grade point average of 3.0 or better for the year, featured 274 Tar Heels. Carolina also had a large number of student-athletes named to the Dean's List at UNC -- 148 in the fall and 137 in the spring.
