CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Dr. Cricket Lane has been named as the first Director of Student-Athlete Development at the University of North Carolina. In the newly-created position, Lane will direct programs for student-athletes in personal, career and leadership development and will oversee the department's community service program.
Lane comes to UNC after four years at St. Francis (Pa.), where she held the same position she'll fill at Carolina. At St. Francis, she also served as Director of Multicultural Affairs and taught in the department of sociology.
"We are thrilled to have Cricket Lane join our staff in this new position as the leader of our student-athlete development programs," said John Blanchard, Senior Associate Athletic Director for Student-Athlete Services at UNC. "In speaking to national leaders in the field, her name kept coming up as the absolute best. We are excited about the positive impact she will have on our student-athletes and the programs we offer them."
Lane is a 1988 graduate of George Mason, where she received a B.S. in psychology. She went on to earn a master's in counseling from Detroit and a Ph.D. in counselor education from Wayne State.
Prior to her arrival at St. Francis, Lane served as Director of Student-Athlete Development at the University of Detroit Mercy, where she also taught graduate-level courses. In addition to her collegiate experience, she has worked as a therapist in private practice. She is a member of the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship Committee and the CHAMPS/Life Skills Advisory Committee.
