CHAPEL HILL -- Cowan Griffin, playing in first year on the Mini-Tour, headed off his closest challengers with a strong performance on Friday of Championship Weekend to capture the coveted Nantucket Cup and the 2003 Mini-Tour championship.
Griffin's team stormed their back nine at Tidewater Golf Club and Plantation in North Myrtle Beach to win on Friday, and a long drive prize was added to pad his points lead. On Saturday at Grande Dunes in Myrtle Beach, the tricky coastal winds provided a tough test for the field, and the day was focused on the battle to finish in the top five.
Several tour veterans played well on Saturday and finished high in the standings. The top ten finishers:
1. Cowan Griffin
2. Sid Champion
3. Tom Hicks
4. Jack Trott
5. Charles Underwood
6. Matt Roberts
7. Jay Younce
8. Jim Woodruff
9. Michael Beale
10. Mike Slomianyj
The top 60 finishers and ties, plus winners of the Rolex Par Three Challenge, sponsored by Carlyle and Co., will be invited to the Tournament Players Championship to be played on September 15th at The Preserve at Jordan Lake, a classic Davis Love III design. Play will be individual scoring on a modified Stableford system. The winner will receive the prestigious Bolero Cup, as well as the top prize of choice.
Plans for the 2004 tour are being finalized, and will likely include a combination of regular Mini-Tour sites like Pinehurst, Uwharrie Point, and the coast.
Several new sites will also be a part of the 2004 schedule. To get on next year's mailing list, respond to this e-mail with your name and address. Rams Club members have priority on participation, but prospective members or guests are able to play to most tournaments.
