Women's Tennis Competes at Furman Fall Invitational

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - In it first home matches of the 2003-04 season, the ninth-ranked North Carolina women's tennis team defeated the College of Charleston, 7-0, and then went on to sweep Elon University, 7-0, in afternoon action. In doubles play, the Tar Heels lost only 5 games in all 6 matches of the day.

"It's very exciting to get our first two matches in and win them," said Head Coach Brian Kalbas, who is in his first season as coach of the Tar Heels. "The team today was very focused and intense."

In singles play, No. 1 seed Aniela Mojzis, a junior from Cape Town, South Africa, overpowered her opponents. She first defeated Charleston's Gabriela Moreira, 6-0, 6-1. With fatigue appearing nonexistent for the Tar Heels, Mojzis then went on to beat Elon's Evin Prelec, 6-1, 6-0. Mojzis, ranked No. 34 nationally, is coming off a strong performance at the UNLV Invitational in Las Vegas last weekend, where she reached the finals after beating No. 21 Alice Barnes of Stanford. Mojzis fell in the final match to Theresa Logar, 6-2, 6-1, also of Stanford.

Tar Heel senior Lee Bairos had strong performances playing at the No. 2 seed in both matches. The Sarasota, Fla., native first beat Charleston's Rachel Magory, 7-6(5), 6-1. Bairos had an easier time with Elon's Elizabeth Kernodle, capturing a 6-2, 6-1 victory later in the day.

Freshman Sara Anundsen continued her strong play winning at the No. 3 seed in the Charleston match and the No. 4 seed in the Elon match. The Littleton, Colo., native cruised past Elon's Melissa Holland, 6-0, 6-0, and was the only Tar Heel to shut-out her opponent in singles.

North Carolina's Caitlin Collins, a freshman from Lawrence, Kan., won a well-fought victory over Charleston's Maxine Capewell, 7-5, 6-2, at the No. 4 seed. Playing at the three seed in the Elon match, Collins dominated, beating Elizabeth Kristofak, 6-0, 6-1.

Jenna Long, another freshman who hails from Fremont, Calif., won both of her matches as the No. 5 seed. She beat Charleston's Lauren Stewart, 6-3, 6-4, and Elon's Diana Pulupa, 6-1, 6-1.

Senior Kendrick Bunn, a Wilson, N.C., native, easily beat Charleston's Ashley Willis at the No. 6 seed, winning 6-0, 6-1. Playing at the the No. 6 seed in the Elon match, Tanja Markovic, a sophomore from Auckland, New Zealand, cruised past Ally Benton, 6-1, 6-0.

In doubles play, the Tar Heels won all six matches of the doubleheader, and their play made them unstoppable. The duo of Aniela Mojzis and Kendrick Bunn took an 8-0 victory at the No. 1 seed against Charleston. Mojzis also defeated Elon 8-0 at the No. 1 seed playing with teammate Caitlin Collins.

The Tar Heels are back in action on Jan. 31 when they play host to Marquette at 1 p.m. The match will be played at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
