Carolina Falls to UNC Greensboro in Tie-Breaker

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The University of North Carolina wrestling team (3-6) tied UNC Greensboro, 20-20, Saturday at Fleming Gymnasium, but the Spartans were awarded the win due to NCAA tie-breaking rules. UNCG (4-4) held a slim 1-0 advantage in the greater number of five-point technical falls to claim the victory.
The Tar Heels opened with wins at 149 by Andrew Slack and at 157 by Ashton Buswell. Slack defeated Kevin Pietropinto, 8-3, and Buswell downed O.T. Johnson, 4-5, to give Carolina a 6-0 advantage. UNCG then won the next two bouts to take a 9-6 lead.
Junior Mark Canty, now 19-12 on the season, won a major decision over Joe Lowe at 184 pounds, 15-7, and senior heavyweight Ryan Adams scored a fall over Brett Reed at 4:24. Adams owns the Tar Heels' best record with a 22-9 record.
Freshman Drew Forshey posted Carolina's last win at 125 pounds with a 15-4 major decision over UNCG's Kyle Terrell. The Spartans' then won at 133 and 141 pounds to knot the match at 20-20. UNCG won the tie-breaker thanks to Kevin Artis' 24-9 win at 141 pounds.
Carolina returns to action Tuesday, Feb. 3 against Duke at Carmichael Auditorium. Action is slated to begin at 7:30 p.m.
