About 12 spots remain for UNC alumni and fans the first annual Carlyle Cup Golf Challenge against alumni and fans from Duke on Nov. 18-19 in Pinehurst. The full-handicap event in a Ryder Cup format has drawn great interest at both schools and even has UNC basketball coach Roy Williams cheering on the Tar Heel team.
Williams has issued a challenge to fans who like to play competitive golf to represent the Tar Heels in the first annual Carlyle Cup Golf Championship, between alumni and fans of UNC and a team of Duke alumni and fans.
"Next to coaching college basketball, playing competitive golf is my favorite thing," Williams said. "The Carlyle Cup Championship is a great way for alumni and fans to get involved in the Carolina-Duke rivalry. I want to issue a challenge to golfers of all handicaps who like to compete, `Let's go down to Pinehurst and smoke the Blue Devils!'
"Some of you may be going to Hawaii with us for the Maui Classic, but those golfers who are aren't, I want to hear when we get back that we won the Carlyle Championship!"
The Carlyle Cup Golf Championship is on courses No. 2 and No. 4 at Pinehurst. No. 2 was the site of the 1999 U.S. Open Championship and will be again in 2005. Two-person teams from each school will compete in better-ball, alternate shot and scramble matches. Players will stay at Pinehurst for two nights and receive shirts and caps in their school colors. A team dinner with all participants and guests will be held between rounds.
UNC's Honorary team captain is Director of Golf and Finley Head Pro Johnny Cake. Duke's captain is Dennis Satyshur, the former two-sport star for the Blue Devils who is head Pro at Caves Valley Golf Club in Maryland. Cake and Satyshur are encouraging their alumni and fans to register to play for their respective teams.
