UNC Director of Golf Johnny Cake coached a 24-man team of UNC alumni and fans to a victory over their Duke counterparts in the first annual Carlyle Cup Team Championship at Pinehurst on Thursday and Friday.
The full-handicap event with Ryder Cup format and scoring was played on Pinehurst No. 2 (site of the 1999 and 2005 U.S. Open Championship) and Pinehurst No. 4. After the first day, Carolina led 26-10, and the Tar Heels went on to win by the final score of 40.5-19.5.
Cake was presented with the crystal Carlyle Cup golf trophy at halftime of the Carolina-Duke football game Saturday in Durham. The trophy will remain in UNC's possession for one year. UNC alumni and fans who are interested in playing in the 2005 event can email Cake at jcake@uncaa.unc.edu. Any golfer with a certified handicap index is eligible to register to participate.
The Carlyle Cup Team Championship is an extension of the Carlyle Cup all-sports competition between UNC and Duke varsity teams in 23 sports and is sponsored by Carlyle & Co., a Greensboro-based jeweler.
