Tar Heels Fall to NC State, 19-12

RALEIGH, N.C. - After falling behind NC State 13-0 to start the match, North Carolina's comeback bid fell short, and the Tar Heels fell to the Wolfpack, 19-12, in Atlantic Coast Conference wrestling action Wednesday at Reynolds Coliseum. With the loss, the Tar Heels fall to 4-10 overall and 1-4 in the ACC, while the Wolfpack is now 8-4 overall and 3-0 in conference action.
NC State opened the bout with four consecutive wins at 149, 157, 165 and 174 pounds to claim the 13-0 advantage. Junior Mark Canty got the Tar Heels on the board with a 3-1 sudden victory win over State's Daniel Humphries at 184 pounds. Canty is now 22-14 on the season and a perfect 5-0 in conference action.
But the Wolfpack quickly reclaimed a 13-point advantage thanks to Zach Garren's sudden victory over UNC's Venroy July at 197 pounds.
Down 16-3, Carolina ran off three consecutive wins to stay alive in the match. Senior heavyweight Ryan Adams extended his winning steak to 11 bouts with a 7-4 win over State's Jainor Palma. Adams is now 27-9 on the season and 5-0 in the ACC. He also owns a 12-2 mark in dual matches.
Freshman Drew Forshey then claimed a 3-2 win over Jeremy Hartrum at 125, and Bobby Shaw claimed an 8-4 win over Garrett Cummings at 133 pounds to cut the Wolfpack lead to 16-12. Forshey improves to 13-0 on the year, and Shaw moves to 15-19.
State put the match away with a 12-7 win at 141 pounds by Alex Hernandez over Mike Booth, which pushed the score to the 19-12 final tally.
With the victory, the Wolfpack sweeps the season series from Carolina for the first time since 1991-92. Earlier this season, State won in Chapel Hill, 26-12, on Jan. 14.
Carolina travels to Nebraska Saturday for an 8 p.m. Eastern match-up with the No. 2-ranked Cornhuskers.
