Carolina rallies to tie the score at 71, but Duke has the ball at halfcourt with four seconds remaining. Bobby Jones steals the inbounds pass and hits a spinning, off-balance layup with one second left to give the Tar Heels a two-point victory at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Two numbers define this game: 8 and 17. Down eight with 17 seconds to play, UNC stages perhaps the most famous comeback in college basketball history, capped by Walter Davis sinking an improbable bankshot from 28 feet out to send the game into overtime. The Heels go on to win by four at Carmichael Auditorium, defeating their arch rivals in improbable fashion for the second time that season.
In the finals of the ACC Tournament, the Tar Heels take the rubber match of that year's contests against the Blue Devils. Carolina captures the conference championship with an eight-point win in Greensboro, a victory punctuated by Dudley Bradley's memorable dunk over Duke's Mike Gminski.
MARCH 12, 1989: Carolina 77, Duke 74
Carolina wins its first ACC Tournament crown since the magical 1982 season with an unforgettable three-point squeaker over the Blue Devils in Atlanta. Three plays are recalled for your listening enjoyment: Steve Bucknall's basket that resulted in a pivotal three-point play; King Rice sinking two clutch free throws to put Carolina up four in the final minute; and Duke's Danny Ferry, the National Player of the Year, nearly connecting on a 75-foot prayer at the buzzer that would have sent the game into overtime.
FEBRUARY 2, 1995: Carolina 102, Duke 100 (2 OT)
The prototypical "ESPN Classic" rivalry contest where records don't matter. Duke, despite suffering through a down year with coach Mike Krzyzewski taking a leave of absence for health reasons, gave the No. 2 Tar Heels all they could handle. Memorable moments include Jerry Stackhouse's amazing up-and-under dunk over Cherokee Parks and Greg Newton; Duke's Jeff Capel hitting a halfcourt shot with no time remaining to force double overtime; and the Blue Devils' Steve Wojciechowski missing a jumper that would have sent the game into a third overtime--instead, Carolina escaped with a two-point victory.
