The North Carolina Tar Heel softball team will host the 2004 Triangle Classic this weekend, despite the movement of game sites for Friday's action. UNC will travel to Elon, N.C. for Friday's games against James Madison and Elon. The games were originally scheduled to take place at Walnut Creek in Raleigh, but the eight-field complex has been reduced to four active fields due to the wet weather conditions.
On Friday, the Tar Heels face Elon at 1 p.m. and James Madison at 3 p.m. at East Field on the campus of Elon University. The tournament schedule is expected to be back entirely in Raleigh on Saturday and Sunday if weather conditions hold up as expected.
Two other groups of teams are playing outside of Raleigh on Friday as well. Kent State, Mercer and UNC-Greensboro will play in Greensboro while Temple, Purdue and Campbell will play at the UNC Softball Complex in Chapel Hill.
The Tar Heels are coming off a disappointing start to the season as they lost a doubleheader to South Carolina (3-2, 3-1) on Feb. 8. UNC sophomore pitcher Crystal Cox bounced back from a game one loss to pitch 3 1/3 scoreless innings in game two, but the Tar Heels were unable to overcome a three-run deficit. Senior Jessica Young provided the offense in game two with the team's first home run of the season, a seventh-inning solo blast over the center field fence.
At the end of each day this weekend, www.TarHeelBlue will have score updates for every scheduled matchup and a complete boxscore for each of Tar Heels' games.
