Carolina Breezes Past #19 South Carolina 6-1

COLUMBIA, S.C. - Carolina handed #19 South Carolina its first loss of the season by a convincing 6-1 margin Tuesday afternoon in Columbia. The Gamecocks were off to their best start since 1984. Meanwhile, Carolina's 10-1 record is the best start to a season since the 1980 team opened with a 13-1 mark.
The Tar Heels captured the doubles point and five of the six singles contests. Geoff Boyd and Nick Monroe improved their record to 9-2 at number one doubles. Monroe also maintained his perfect 11-0 singles record in dual matches. Senior Andy Metzler won his 19th singles match of the season.
Sam Paul, a Lancaster, S.C., native and former USC assistant, has led his Tar Heels to victory in three of the last four meetings against South Carolina in Columbia. Carolina returns home to open ACC play against Clemson on Saturday at 1 p.m.
