CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The No. 19 North Carolina men's tennis team received a stiff challenge from unranked NC State Wednesday afternoon before rallying to beat the Wolfpack 5-2 at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. With the win, Coach Sam Paul's team remains undefeated in the ACC at 3-0 and improves to 17-2 overall. NC State is now 5-10 and 1-3 in the ACC.
The Wolfpack was looking for its first win over the Tar Heels since 1988 and it claimed the doubles point as Conor Taylor and Andre Iriarte defeated Jonathan Janda and Raian Luchici at No. 3 doubles in a tiebreaker 7-5 after the two teams split at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles.
Brad Pomeroy and Geoff Boyd scored straight set wins for the Tar Heels at No. 5 and No. 6 singles to briefly give UNC a 2-1 lead in the match before NC State's Conor Taylor, ranked No. 72 nationally, finished off a 6-3, 6-0 upset win over No. 31 Nick Monroe of Carolina at No. 1 singles.
Derek Porter regained the lead for North Carolina with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Val Banada at No. 2 singles before the Tar Heels finished off the win with wins at No. 3 by Andy Metzler and at No. 4 by Raian Luchici, both in straight sets.
Pomeroy has won 10 singles matches in a row and is 24-4 on the season, while Boyd has taken seven straight and is 25-4 and Luchici has captured six in a row and is 21-7.
The Tar Heels will try to remain undefeated in the ACC and run their winning streak to five matches when they play host to the No. 35 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (11-5, ACC 3-2) Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. NC State hosts the Yellow Jackets Saturday at 11 a.m. in Raleigh.
