CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill women's tennis team beat Notre Dame 5-0 on Sunday at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. The ninth-ranked Tar Heels go to 14-6 and the 23rd-ranked Fighting Irish fall to 8-6. UNC junior Aniela Mojzis, ranked 29th, upset the No. 10 player in the country, Alicia Salas, with a 6-4, 6-1 win.
UNC swept Notre Dame in doubles for the point and took four of the singles matches for the win. The No. 2 and No. 3 singles matches were stopped early due to time.
In doubles play, Tar Heel juniors Mojzis and Kendall Cline (19-9), ranked 23rd nationally, won the No. 1 seed match 8-4 over Catrina and Christian Thompson. In the third-seeded match, freshman Sara Anundsen and Jenna Long (6-2) clinched the doubles point by defeating Emily Neighbours and Kristina Stastny 8-3. Then UNC seniors Lee Bairos and Kendrick Bunn (2-0), paired up for just the second time this season, beat Lauren Connelly and Alicia Salas at the No. 2 spot 8-6.
In singles play, Bunn (9-5) finished in quick fashion with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Stastny at the five seed. Then Mojzis (20-13) completed her upset of Salas, cruising in the second set. Anundsen (23-8) finished next to clinch the match for the Tar Heels. She beat Connelly 6-2, 6-3.
Long (15-8) also won her singles match against Sarah Jane Connelly at the sixth seed. After winning the first set 6-2, she lost the second 4-6 but fought back to take the third set 6-2 for the win.
The Bairos/Christian Thompson match at the two spot was stopped with the score 6-1, 4-6, 3-2 with Thompson winning the first set and up 3-2 in the second. The Cline/Catrina Thompson match at the three seed was stopped at 7-6(4), 3-3 with Thompson winning the first-set tiebreak. UNC had already clinched the match when the two matches were called due to time constraints.
With the win, the Tar Heels broke a three-match losing streak. North Carolina (0-3 ACC) will look for its first Atlantic Coast Conference win as it takes on NC State on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. Then the Tar Heels will travel to Virginia and Maryland on April 3 and 4, respectively.
