Chapel Hill, N.C. - The 18th-ranked North Carolina men's tennis team rolled past 42nd-ranked Wake Forest 6-1 Wednesday in this season's final home match at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. With the victory, the Tar Heels improved their record to 19-2 on the season and 5-0 in ACC play. This is Carolina's most successful season start in 26 years.
Prior to the last match of their Carolina tennis careers, the team took time to honor its three senior tri-captains Nick Monroe, Andy Metzler and Ben Aiken. Jeremy Ledford, a senior from Flat Rock, NC, was also honored prior to the match. After the ceremony, the Tar Heels came out strong to take the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and 2 seeds.
In singles play, Carolina claimed wins on five of six courts to secure the 6-1 victory. On the number one court, #31 Nick Monroe defeated Wake Forest's #37 Derrick Spice in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4. Sophomore Raian Luchici, junior Geoff Boyd and sophomore Brad Pomeroy also clinched two-set victories over Demon Deacons at the No. 4, 5 and 6 seeds, respectively. At the No. 2 seed, Derek Porter earned Carolina's final point of the day after a hard-fought battle with Wake Forest's Todd Paul 6-2, 6-7 (4-7), (10-3).
After the match, Coach Sam Paul expressed his appreciation for the seniors' hard work and leadership throughout the year. "I am very proud of the seniors today. They are a great group of guys," he said.
The Tar Heels look to face their toughest ACC competition yet this season when they travel to Charlottesville, Va. on Saturday, April 3. The Tar Heels will take on #12 Virginia at 1:00 p.m.
