
Carolina's Adams, July Claim ACC Wrestling Titles

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - North Carolina seniors Ryan Adams and Venroy July were each victorious in their respective weight classes to lead the Tar Heels to an fourth-place finish at the 2004 Atlantic Coast Conference Wrestling Championships Saturday at Virginia's University Hall. July won at 197 pounds, while Adams won in the heavyweight division for their first conference titles.
NC State won the team title with 84 points, while Virginia was second and Duke took third. Carolina's fourth-place finish was its first since 1990. The Tar Heels won their 15th conference title last season.
Adams, who is now 30-10 on the year, recorded a pair of impressive wins, beating fourth-seeded Roy Williams of Duke (Fall, 1:48) and No. 3-seed Barry Stein of Maryland (MD, 15-6) in the final. July opened with a 10-6 victory over No. 3 seed Tim Marcantonio and then downed top-seeded Zach Garren of NC State, 4-1, in the championship bout. July is now 22-17 on the year.
The Tar Heels also got runner-up finishes from Andrew Slack at 149 pounds and Mark Canty at 184 pounds. Slack lost to State's Jake Giamoni (MD, 13-4) in the final, while Canty fell to Duke's Frank Cornely, 7-6, in his final bout.
Carolina added fourth-place finishes from Drew Forshey (125 pounds), Mike Booth (141 pounds), Ashton Buswell (157 pounds) and Garrett Atkinson (165 pounds).
Next up for the Tar Heels are the 2004 NCAA Championships, scheduled for March 18-20 in Kansas City.
