RALEIGH, N.C. - The 13th-ranked University of North Carolina men's tennis team improved to 22-3 overall by blanking NC State 4-0 Friday morning in the quarterfinals of the 2004 Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Tennis Championship at the Millbrook Exchange Park Tennis Center.
The Tar Heels advance to the semifinals of the 2004 tournament where they will play the No. 5 seed Clemson Tigers. Saturday's semifinal match will begin at 10 a.m. Clemson defeated No. 4 seed Georgia Tech 4-3 in the ACC quarterfinals Friday afternoon. The Tar Heels defeated the Tigers in the regular season meeting in Chapel Hill by a 4-3 score.
Carolina, seeded No. 1 in the tournament, won the doubles point against the Wolfpack (6-16) and then got singles wins from Nick Monroe, Geoff Boyd and Brad Pomeroy to clinch the win in about two and a half hours.
"I thought we played pretty well," said UNC head coach Sam Paul. "NC State gave us a tight match during the regular season but we came out today, played well in doubles and took care of business in singles.
"I'm proud of Nick Monroe. He played very well today. He had lost to Conor Taylor three and love in the regular season and came back strong today. It also helps to play a quick match. It always helps to get off the courts as quickly as possible and save your legs as well as avoiding any injuries."
Carolina opened the match with wins at No. 1 doubles by the 13th-ranked team of Geoff Boyd and Nick Monroe and at No. 3 doubles where Jonathan Janda and Raian Luchici edged NC State's Val Banada and William Noblitt 8-6.
The Tar Heels went on to win in singles at No 1. where Nick Monroe beat Conor Taylor 6-2, 6-3, at No. 5 where Geoff Boyd beat Jon Davis 6-3, 6-3 and at No. 6 where Brad Pomeroy downed William Noblitt 6-4, 6-2.
Monroe's singles win was the 96th of his career, moving him into a tie for second place in career singles wins at Carolina with Paul Harsanyi. Only David Caldwell, with 116 career wins, has won more singles matches in Tar Heel history than Monroe.
